Any rumblings around division 1 hockey on possible transfers? Seems like there is always a handful throughout the summer

This isn't a transfer. RPI's Drew Melanson graduated in three years. He will go to grad school at BU and play there. As a graduate he won't have to sit out a year.

Garrett Metcalf Leaves UMass Lowell to Mercyhurst Lakers.

Article on his departure...........
http://www.sbncollegehockey.com/hockey-east/2017/4/12/15277528/garrett-metcalf-leaves-umass-lowell-anaheim-ducks-prospect-norm-bazin-nhl-draft-2015-ushl

Twitter announcement of his destination...........
https://twitter.com/cheiftendy?lang=en

The Salt Lake City, Utah native was selected by the Anaheim Ducks in the sixth round of the 2015 NHL Draft.

Metcalf played in just four games for Norm Bazin’s team (UMass-Lowell) in 2016-17, posting a 2.59 goals against average and .913 save percentage.

I would think Mr. Metcalf would need to red shirt a full season however not positive of that fact.

Chris Wilkie has left North Dakota and will play at Colorado College after sitting out a year. Nick Jones will play for North Dakota this season after leaving Ohio State and playing at Penticton last year.

Not announced officially yet but second team All American Goalie Kyle Hayton is leaving Saint Lawrence and transferring to Wisconsin. Rumor has it he will finish his degree this summer and transfer as a grad student. Not 100% certain on that part.

What are the rules on transferring, most I believe have to red shirt a year but is that true in all cases?

You don't have to sit if you already graduate from your original school and enroll in a masters/higher program that isn't offered at your original school. Obvously this applies mostly to redshirts or kids who are on top of things enough to graduate in 3 years.

D1 kids can also transfer to D3 (or club) teams without sitting out. As far as I know there's no non-grad way to transfer D1 to D1 without sitting. There used to be an exception for kids who were cut from their teams strictly for not being good enough athletically, which required approval from the former team/coach, but the NCAA removed that completely threeish years ago.

I believe that if a program is discontinued (think Wayne St. from a decade ago or so), those players can transfer without penalty. Maybe somewhat obvious, but /shrug.

FWIW, D1 women players can transfer from one school to another without having to sit out. One major exception: players who transfer from one WCHA conference school to another do have to sit out one year.

What possible reason is there for this other than the NCAA just being the NCAA? I understand the year is in place so high end D1 players aren't just constantly moving around to better situations but if a player gets cut who is a healthy scratch Hockey East player but a possible bottom six AHA forward, he absolutely should be able to play right away. The NCAA is basically forcing a kid in this type of situation to go to a D3 school.

Gee, you're making transferring to D3 sound like being sent to Siberia.

Nothing wrong with D3. Just feel like a kid should have the option of staying D1 if he's cut and good enough to play D1.

Goaltender Patrick ‘Packy’ Munson has left the University of Denver after a mutual parting of ways with the hockey program....... Munson is now looking for a new school to transfer to for next season, where he will most likely be eligible to play immediately. https://www.sbncollegehockey.com/nchc/2017/7/17/15985082/packy-munson-leaves-denver

Looking at a couple of articles Mr. Patrick Munson had a tremendous breakout freshman season at the University of Vermont prior to changing over to University of Denver. What a great opportunity for any college team in need of goaltending, good luck to Mr. Munson he obviously has skills that many teams can benefit from.
