  • UNLV next? NHL franchise adds momentum.

    Sorry if this is a redux, but I didn't see a thread dedicated to it.

    With the announcement of Las Vegas being the next NHL expansion city, that should add momentum to some of the talk of UNLV going varsity. A simple Google search yields a few articles, here's one;

    Well if the city can find $500M for the NHL expansion fee, what's another $100M for a college team?

      Probably because it would be in the NHL thread in the Café. But I checked, and no one's talking about it there yet so OK then.

      I was in Las Vegas last week and saw the new arena. It's right on the strip...well, behind New York New Yor and the Monte Carlo. It's big. And it went up real fast because when I was there in January 2014 I didn't even notice a hole in the ground. Talked with a cab driver about maybe getting an NHL team there. He was all for it. And as I was spending time in and out of hotels/casinos, I thought "How awesome would a Frozen Four here be?" I'd go.

        But the NCAA would never go because of the immorality associated with Vegas (and I typed that with a straight face).

          If the NHL can consider expanding into Vegas (hey - did the folks up in Quebec pizz off Bettman, or what? ), then there's no reason Bentley can't posture themselves for admission into HEA within the next 5-10 years.

            Seems the weak Canadian Dollar was the primary reason for tabling Quebec for now.

            And Las Vegas would be a very, very interesting place for a FF. Hosting the teams/fans in the CityCenter complex next door to the arena would provide for a very condensed and "focused on the event" atmosphere that many here always complain about. Hey maybe the winner would get their fight song blared along with the Bellagio fountains.

              If UW can be the host in Tampa, they can be he host in Las Vegas too.

                  How about a weak Canadian dollar and the NHL looking for a western location are more likely reasons that Quebec doesn't make the cut.

                    One less logical escape route for the Arizona/Phoenix cluster that hasn't quite panned out to date. Plus why not Seattle instead of Vegas? But I suppose the NHL has been making goo-goo eyes at Vegas since they started hosting their season-ending awards there years ago.

                    It's just disappointing to see Quebec still sitting on the sidelines 20 years later. Think about it - what's the difference between Quebec and Cleveland (from a sporting viewpoint) ... both lost their flagship sports franchises despite strong fan support, but primarily because they were in outdated facilities ... both franchises went on to win their sport's championships in their new cities relatively quickly ... yet the NFL rectified the Cleveland situation fairly quickly with another team, but Quebec is still waiting.

                    Makes you wonder if Quebec's status as a Francophone city has made it *easier* to overlook them? Let's face it, Winnipeg (Anglo) was always getting more mainstream press about getting their NHL team back after it left under similarly dicey circumstances. Heck, there is more mainstream (Anglo) press about Hartford returning to the NHL than Quebec. Think about that for a second ...

                        Quebec didn't get one because of conference balancing and the Canadian dollar, simple as that. Not to mention I think the NHL is going to wait and see what happens with Karmanos' (that piece of sh!!t) lawsuit from his sons and his sale of the team. I wouldn't be shocked to eventually see the Hurricanes move up there.

                          The conference balancing stuff is a nonsense argument as the NHL induced that on itself and when we're talking half a billion or more it becomes a non issue quick.

                          I think the Canadian dollar is the bigger impact and that the NHL still has the long term view that a market of suitable size can be spun to gold as long as you wait long enough.

                          As for the NCAA... That operates on a different clock and has nothing to do with gambling. It's not like the NCAA can stop a UNLV from doing something. They already play basketball (long live the Tark)

                            100,000 Canadians are worth more in HRR than 70,000 Americans.
