Or, Bentley, IF they build a new rink on campus, and they win a few AHC tourneys?

You mean like UCONN? ;-)

I agree with you. I predict UConn will make the NCAA Regionals before Maine makes a return visit. Perhaps, even UMass with their recent hire and commitment to the program.

Wow, and I thought I was down on UNH's outlook. Can someone up in Orono please put away all sharp objects?

There's a better chance NICC will return to HE before either of those two programs next make the D-1 tourney.

Chuck, no offense, but you need to wake up. Not predicting UConn will be a power but with Thompson and Letunov, those are better building blocks than Maine has.

Those guys aren't going to be sticking around for much longer (like Cavanaugh).

You've been around for a while now, J.D. We're seeing the same things said about UConn now that we saw being said about UMass a generation ago. The two programs are remarkably similar in many ways ... large D-1 state schools with prominent hoops programs, but with no hockey history or culture, ramped up lower conference teams who decide to go D-1 into Hockey East by hiring a long-term BC assistant coach, surrounded by unrealistic bluster about "potential" and "sleeping giants" ... and flounder instead of rise through the ranks.

Those guys aren't going to be sticking around for much longer (like Cavanaugh).

Just one of the many challenges faced by a program with no significant hockey history to draw from.

Good point, schiegs, a la above posts.

I am still hoping that the Falcons get another shot at beating the Cats at Lake Whitt, as they came close in their inaugural matchup last November.

There are programs with history that don't have much of a future, LSSU being one. If i saw signs of Gendron getting Maine back to even a Whitehead level, I'd have a different opinion. Maine needed an up and coming young coach, not Gendron.

Cav leaving and Thompson/Letunov leaving are certainly game changers. Right now though, Maine having a good history means absolutely nothing. And it really hasn't meant anything for some time now.

There's quite a bit of talent in the state of Connecticut, much more than in Maine. UConn won't get all those players but I think they will get some.

In the spirit of baseless speculation;

Even though a lot of HE fans seemingly would prefer to stay at 11 teams, IF the league goes back to 12, who will it be? Who do you want it to be?

Pecking order:
QU- Best on-ice product, but rumor has it they're happy where they are. Move-in ready.

RPI- Intriguing idea, but out of footprint? Would expand the brand a bit, and a strong hockey tradition.

HC- Seems to be a better fit in ECAC, but no room without QU or RPI moving. Not a quality on-campus facility, but a regional arena across town, a la UCONN. Good athletic tradition, with ties to BC.

Bentley- No hockey tradition, no NCAA appearances, sub-standard facility (all of which held for UCONN, as well), and how many HE teams do we need in Eastern Mass? However, new arena possibly (likely?) coming, strong institutional commitment, and easy travel (you can see Gasson Tower from the roof of Adamian Center).

Prediction: QU
Choice: Bentley

I'm also curious what people think of the moon landing conspiracies.

Will be 11 rather than 9 HEA teams next year after NICC leaves for the B1G. But, many (not I) pine for the days before UVM, NICC, and UConn joined. Now some (not I) would like to jettison UMass and UConn, which would get HEA back to 9 teams.

Of course, I would like to see a new rink on Bentley's campus, but the one planned will not be large enough for HEA, even if it will have as many seats as has Lawlor. I will miss the AHC rivalry between the Falcons and the Crusaders if Holy Cross joins HEA.

Check UMO threads for interest in lunar landing conspiracies.

I think most HE fans would love to see Quinnipiac make the move, IF anyone is going to be added. And I'd also agree that the order of preference would be just in the same order as you've outlined it.

That's it for the "want" department. In real life, it takes two to tango, and I see no persuasive case for either Quinnipiac or RPI to leave the ECAC. If they get to the 3rd option on that list, I think HC would accept willingly.

So "prefer" would be Quinnipac ... "predict" would be Holy Cross.

As usual, one reads this thread and wonders if you guys aren't cursing your luck that MIT or UMass-Boston didn't play up before the D-III moratorium kicked in.

No kidding. ;) Just think about those missed opportunities ... BU vs. MIT in the "Battle of the Charles", and/or adding UMass-Boston to UMass-Amherst and UMass-Lowell into a three-way "Who's the Flagship?" rivalry? Bummer. :(

UMass Boston made the d3 frozen four. Anyone sure Amherst would win a three game series with them? I'm not :p

And, PSU (Plymouth State) went pretty deep into the D3 post-season also; doubt that UNH would want to face the Panthers anytime soon.

Plymouth got blown out by Salem State in this year's MASCAC finals. No NCAA bid for them.
