Saw an interesting Tweet by Brad Schlossman today which sums up Tech hockey since I left campus in '98.
Total wins over five year spans:
96-01 -- 46
01-06 -- 41
06-11 -- 47
11-16 -- 95

So when we have a bad game or let one slip away, let's try to remember the big picture and where this program is at right now. I don't see any reason why that number couldn't be 120+ when we look back at 2016-21.

One thing bothers me about this page...

Didn't we just win our 7th WCHA championship?

Mitch Reinke is ready for college hockey. His hockey IQ is off the charts.
Saw Mitch play last year at the old Dane County Coliseum with CR against a MadCaps squad that included both Watson boys. Reinke was by far the strongest D on the ice that night for either team and he dominated the game. He'll hit the ground running at Tech. Tough news about Ford, but I think he belongs back at Wisconsin, close to family and the program he grew up wanting to play for. I think he would have only seen solid ice time as a senior at MTU....not a major loss but unfortunate that he didn't make the move as soon as Eaves was canned....Kiilunen seems like a last minute filler, but you never know....look at Vallis and Anderson...Mel and co built them into solid contenders for ice time.

I wouldn't be too worried about Reinke's senior year...look what happen the last 2 years with majority of d-men not upper class.

Not to mention the team has been heavily focused on defense. Lots of potential qualify committed for the next 3 season.

Didn't we just win our 7th WCHA championship?
I thought the same thing back in March. I looked into it at that time and our other MacNaughton Cup was for a playoff championship.

Here is what Wiki says:
MacNaughton Cups Won by Michigan Tech (outright or co-winner)
1961-62 WCHA Tourney (Tech also won the WCHA regular season)
1964-65 WCHA Tourney (UND won the regular season)

1965-66 WCHA Season (Cup is now awarded to regular season champ, how convenient)
1968-69 WCHA Season
1970-71 WCHA Season
1975-76 WCHA Season
2015-16 WCHA Season (shared)

So that's our 7th MacNaughton Cup, but only 6th WCHA regular season title.
But any graphics we do for the team should be with seven cups. ;-)

It is very nice to be able to say a player wouldn't get ice time at Tech, so he should go to Wisconsin to actually get on the ice.

Reinke is a solid player who should see some good playing time this year. Really liked what I saw of him with Cedar Rapids last year. He'll eventually be in Tech's top 4 D and see 2nd PK minutes in the future as well.

I saw this posted today related to Bridgewater the Vikings QB getting injured during practice before the regular season even started. A concept Tech fans lived and breathed for decades... I noted that the right hand side was black and gold. Looking good for Tech me thinks... :)

Pretty sure I saw Keegan load up the Ford Family truckster and head out on his 5+ hour journey to Houghton late last week.

There's a Keegan Ford in the student directory, just not on the hockey roster.

Someone needs to watch the hockey video wishing Jerry MacInnes happy birthday and see if Keegan is in there.

So if you look at the losses from last year, we have to replace a lot of goals scored and more importantly the defensive ability of the lost forwards. I can see us taking a step forward on the scoring, and making up the losses, but i question if the new forwards can play two way hockey. We have to get out of the gate fast and the pressure will really be on the 3ed and 4th lines to perform.
Also I think our league will be closer than last year with LSSU and NMU improving.

IMHO, If Heinonen and Steman are both 100% the only concern this team should have is in net. I believe they can be as good or better offensively. Defensively they should be as good, may have to reign in the offensive play of a couple of the defense men until the goaltending picture becomes clearer.

I really don't think the team will have to rely too much on any of the new guys. They should be able to sprinkle them in and out of the line up a little at a time and see who rises to the top.

It is going to be very interesting to see what defense-man(men) yield to Rienke. Sounds like he may be a stud!

Also, going to be interesting to see who locks up the 4th center spot. Steman, Lucchini and Neville should be a given. Will Blacklock fill the void? Will Lesperance get a shot, he took a lot of draws for Eick at the tail end of the season. Will one of the new guys be up to the task like Lucchini was last year?

I hope they find the right recipe because if the team flounders in October, with Duluth, Michigan and Minnesota State, it may be tough to recover.

Tech has a plethora of forwards if they wanted to make L'Esperance a center.
I just think the number 1 line takes a bit of a hit without L'Esperance.
It is a great option as Anderson and Blacklock can go to wing as a result of no room at center.
I will be really interested to see the lineup for UMD.

Just to clarify; I don't feel NMU or even UAH can be taken lightly (other October foes) they just shouldn't have as big a role in the PWR.

Just crunched some numbers on attendance for D1. Tech has some impressive numbers.

Michigan Tech is number 1 in the county when you look at attendance as a percentage of population of the city the school is located in, and number 2 in the country in attendance as a percentage of population of the metro/micro area. When comparing to the amount of people to draw from, we get more people to come to games than anyone in the country except for UND.

When I looked at the top 10 of Attendance as a Percentage of Metro/Micro area, the WCHA as a whole looks very good. 7 out of the top 10 are WCHA schools.
2. MTU
4. BSU
5. LSSU
6. FSU
8. MSU
9. NMU
10. Alaska

I'm not sure that this is a desirable statistic. It says something about the school's ability to draw fans from a limited marketplace, but it also strongly implies that there's a cap on growth. Tech has great fans, to be sure.

I think it says that the WCHA schools are in smaller, but very hockey rich towns. I don't think that is a bad thing.

edit: For MTU, it is a pretty strong piece of data against the potential future arena expansion. If Tech is already drawing the 2nd highest percentage of the local population in the entire country, how much more upward movement is possible if the arena is expanded?

I love the idea of renovations, and improving the arena, but I am still not convinced that the addition of seats should be a priority. Add a club level, add amenities, add a beer garden, etc. But maybe cool it on increasing the capacity.

I saw Scott White was just named assistant GM of the Dallas Stars. Well, crank up the way-back machine as it is literally Throw Back Thursday... I just added these two jerseys to the collection today. After 20+ years stored who knows where, these two oldies finally found their way into the public's hands. I think someone in the Dallas Stars organization should be on one of those hoarders shows. Or maybe Scott's first order in his new role was to literally clean house down at the rink? "Why are we saving all this stuff?..."

I'm thinking these jerseys are likely preseason or training camp based on the selling price and since they've never been sold before (teams tend to reused preseason jerseys over and over and over) but if these turn out to be regular season jerseys... I'll be even more thrilled. They might be all of the above for all I know because Jim didn't play a lot of games with Dallas. The fact that they still had Storm's name on them and they didn't get recycled after he left, they could be regular season. I'll keep my fingers crossed but it's going to take some serious digging. I've never even seen a photo of Storm in a Dallas jersey. Most everything out there is from when he was with Team USA or Hartford.

PS The same company had a Teslak Flyers jersey as well, but it was never worn. You can still see the tags on the arm. If you don't care about game used, at $140 the price is pretty reasonable for a pro quality NHL jersey already lettered and numbered. If it had been game worn, I would have snagged that one as well.

Honestly, that's a steal for an MTU fan who wants a Flyers jersey. You can't get a blank authentic jersey for that price.
