Denna Laing Princeton '14

For several years I followed the Princeton Women's hockey team, as I had several players in classes I taught. I have continued to follow the team and occasionally check in on this forum. I am a little surprised to not see any discussion here of Princeton's Denna Laing '14, who was twice captain and won several awards. She became a part of the Boston Pride professional team and suffered a severe spinal cord injury that left her initially with little movement in her arms and none in her legs. She's now in rehab in Boston and making progress. You can follow on the family's FB page:

Like you seen her play many times as one of our daughters is of the same age and played against her many times as a member of another Ivy team. Still have pictures of the two competing against each other.

Jillian Dempsey introduced us at one of the Eagles-Harvard games. Lovely kid, fantastic spirit. We're doing what we can to support her.

I am glad someone has started a thread just for her. I suspect rehab will be a long, long process.

Never met the girl to the best of my knowledge but as a Harvard fan watch her sisters Brianna (G) and Lexie (F)

Horrible thing to happen to a talented young woman.

There actually has been quite a bit of support for Denna. The NHL has made significant monetary contributions to her fund and the Bruins had a video of her played before one of their games. At the Harvard-Princeton game at Bright-Landry, there was a box to drop notes of encouragement to Denna and there was a raffle as well to raise funds. There have been several articles about her injury and the NHL on NBC mentioned her injury in the aftermath of the Winter Classic. Chara dropped by her hospital room to offer support. So I think that there is substantial awareness of her condition and a great outpouring of support.

Denna made a surprise appearance at the Pride game at the weekend, driving her wheelchair onto the ice for the team huddle before the game and watching the third period from the top of the stands. We didn't approach her but she seemed enormously good-spirited, gracious with her time, happy to take photos with fans, and showing no signs of fatigue. Hope the recovery continues to go well for her.

That's great news. Keeping my fingers crossed that she continues in her recovery.
