  • ECAC 2015-2016 Season

Here is a brief overview of what each ECAC team lost to graduation, is coming back and the freshmen. Did not try to put in much analysis, just a listing by team based on the 2015 season Finish. I may be missing some players who have left their team. Feel Free to comment.

Clarkson brings back much of their scoring and key players. LGT LGT LGT
Clarkson: Graduates 2 good Dmen in Matteucci and Shields, a good forward in Lambert , little used Boss, Horn in G
Coming back is IMHO the ECAC's best Senior Class: Ambrose (AL 3rd Team), Fast (AL 1st Team) on D, Mercer (AL 1st Team), MacAulay (AL 3rd Team) and Howe F
Junior Class: Has some scoring punch with Bannon and Gillham F, Jacobson is good on D and Johnson is the backup G
Sophomore class: Is led by Harmon (All Rookie Team) on D and Titus, Bellerive, Fournier and Lefler F who I hope can contribute more scoring than last year and in goal Tiley (ECAC Goaltender of the Year, Rookie of the Year and AL 1st Team)
Finally they have an excellent Freshman Class with 4 of the top 10 scorers from the PWHL: McGill, Gabel, Vinkle and Mariani F and Keenan and Pozzebon on D
The keys to Clarkson: Stay healthy, Get the freshmen acclimated to Div I hockey (especially Keenan and Pozzebon on D), and get consistent scoring out of the sophs and frosh.

Harvard lost a bunch of key players from their ECAC Championship and NC$$ Runnerup team
They will certainly miss Armstrong, Crowe, Fry, Reber F and Edney (ECAC BEST DMAN, AL 1st Team), Gedman, Pucci on D.
Senior class: Is excellent D'Oench (19 Goals), Parker (AL 2nd Team, High Team Pts 39), Crunale and Harvey F, Picard on D and key for them is Maschmeyer (AL 3rd Team) in G
Junior class: Daniels (19 Goals) F, a bunch of Questions on D: Frazer, Mastel, Rachlin and White and another solid goalie in Laing
Sophomore class: Laing (All Rookie Team), Heffernan (I like her play), Krzyszczyk, Mullins,Friesen F, and again a question on D in Ziadie
Freshman class: Fusco, Zarzecki, Warner, Ozturk F, and Hallett, Tse on D

Quinnipiac lost their coach which from all that has been written that may be a blessing.
They Graduate a lot of their scoring in Johansson, Darkangelo, Fritz-Ward up Front, nothing on D and their all-star goalie Laden (AL 2nd Team).
Senior class is led by Kosta (Medical Redshirt, AL 3rd Team), Connery, Brown, Agostinelli F, and Roesler, West, Tamberg D.
Junior class has Woods, Turner, Marmer, Nervick F, Baumgardt, Greco D and Rossman in G.

Cornell is another program that loses a lot
Cornell Graduates: Jenner (ECAC Player of the Year, AL 1st Team), Fulton (AL 2nd Team) and Saulnier (AL 1st Team) scored 56 goals while the rest of the team scored 52.

Nice work! Just noting that Boulier has another year left at St. Lawrence since she took a redshirt year two years ago. She's an excellent little D.

Dang. She was the one player I was glad that graduated. Her return certainly gives the Saints a boost. She is an excellent player. I have updated SLU's stats in my second post and my first post. Thanks for the info.

Very interesting compendium of key information, vicb! Can't wait for the season to start.

Apropos of "a bunch of Questions on D: Frazer, Mastel, Rachlin," though, we should bear in mind that two years ago, Frazer, Mastel, Rachlin were three of the five defensemen on a team that achieved an NCAA berth. Mastel was named to the ECAC all-rookie team that year. Last year their ice time was greatly reduced playing behind Pucci, Picard, Edney and Gedman, but I expect good things from them this year.

                  Re: ECAC 2015-2016 Season

Having all this information about each opponent has prompted me to refocus on a tactical issue that Harvard will have this season: namely, whether to concentrate their best forwards in two lines or spread them evenly over three. Last year, with the return of two senior F's who had had to miss the previous year and would otherwise have already graduated, it was possible to have three relatively equal lines and that paid dividends, especially against teams like Cornell whose strategy was to feature one single overpowering line but have none of its superstars on any other line. This year Harvard could either make two lines out of its six returning top 10 F's, Katey Stone's traditional approach over the years, or spread them evenly over three lines trying to replicate last year's successful tactic but needing strong contributions from at least three of the other eight F's in order to do so.

Looking at the rosters and scoring statistics above reminds me that each opponent will have its own way of distributing its talent over two or three lines, and it may well be that in some match-ups Harvard may be better advised to concentrate its firepower in two lines and in others better advised to spread it over three. Should be an interesting puzzle.

Mastel was named to the ECAC all-rookie team that year. Last year their ice time was greatly reduced playing behind Pucci, Picard, Edney and Gedman, but I expect good things from them this year.
Good to know. Thanks for the comments. You know more about the Crimson than I.

As a note, White not on the roster anymore....

But who on earth gave them a first place vote in the ECAC poll? That's ridiculous.

                        Katie Stone is that you??

Oh, sure. You say that now, but come Oct 23/24, you'll forget that the Big Red are just starting their season and are supposedly a team not worthy of being considered an ECAC contender even by someone not permitted to vote for one of either Harvard or Clarkson.
