  • WCHA 2015-16: So here's what we think that we know...

Well, Jack Hittinger put his pre-season media poll out today, so it's time to start talking about the regular season. An exercise for the interested poster(s):

    1. What's your 1-10 ranking of the teams?

    2. What's the banding of those teams? Last year it was 1-3, 4-7 (less Ala*ka), and 8-10. I don't think that the gap between the first and second tiers will be as big, and the overall grouping will be.

    3. What are your first- and second-team All-WCHA picks?

    4. Who is your player of the year?

    5. What's your All-Rookie team, and who is your newcomer of the year?

I'd like to make a request: would a fan from each team be so kind as to do a list of additions and subtractions from your roster from 14-15 to 15-16?

        That's not an easy one.

I haven't spent much time thinking about it, but I have it as BG-MTU-MSU >> UAH-BSU-FSU-UAF > UAA-LSU But it's going to be really tight. I talked to Mike Corbett this morning, and he agreed: the top tier will be closer to the second tier this year, and the second group is going to be a tossup.

Until I've had time to look at all 10 rosters to know who came and went, it'll be difficult for me to answer the all-league teams.

Re: WCHA 2015-16: So here's what we think that we know...

I believe every WCHA team has posted their roster except for FSU & LSSU (although there may been changes since I last looked). I usually post the table below on our own season thread when I have seen all the rosters, but thought I'd post what I have even without FSU & LSSU. I know there are better sources out there, but I just throw what I want to see on one summary worksheet. I don't guarantee this is completely accurate.

                Best guess for 2015-16:

with Valleau's recent signing, BGSU's roster is down to 27, with 11 from the USHL.

                        That's not an easy one.

Well from a general perspective I think the league as a whole will be better. I agree it will be quite a bit closer. I think nearly every team will be better than last years'. Having said that I question if MSU can do it again.( However their second half schedule is fairly easy so they might be tough to beat once again.) I think Bemidji will have a tough time being as good as last year.
I really don't know much about the rest of the field except for Tech, which I think will have a better team, with more speed on defense.

While strength of play will determine where everyone finishes, the schedule also plays a part. Below shows how the conference schedule shakes out.

Photo & Video Sharing by SmugMug

Regardless how hard a team may play them this year, based only on opponent’s prior year finishes, NMU and UAA may have the tougher conference schedules, while MSU probably doesn’t. Keep in mind that this over-simplistic look at things (# games x last year final ranking) is kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy, where last year’s lower finishers will usually have tougher ranked schedules.

That's all I got. Now it's time to ignore all this and for everyone to just pick what their gut tells them.
