Last year, Red was on record saying he was set to retire. That was before the late run in the CCHA Playoffs happened.

Now? Huh. I can't see how he thinks this is one iota better than last season.

No tournament for the second straight year after making the previous 22, inconsistent play, star players dogging it. And what sums this season up the most: 2-3 against Penn State.

A garbage team that has nowhere near the talent Michigan does. And yet, Michigan now has a losing record against a team that has been around two ****ing years.

The most frustrating part is this Michigan team is so good talent wise. We all saw it points in this season. They beat BC, Minnesota at home by two or more goals. But lost to garbage teams like PSU and sparty two or more times.

Red said he will step down if he feels he's getting in the way.

Candidates: Mel Pearson, Mike Babcock (www.detroitnews.com/article/20140123/SPORTS0201/301230127), Rick Bennett. Danton Cole?

I thought it would take quite a few more years before the michigan teams became the cellar-dwellers of the big10.

I would like to see Red stay around for another 10 years.

I think Bennett would be a great replacement. What he has done with no scholarships is impressive.

Why would Mike Babcock leave the Red Wings to coach Michigan? Absurd.

Why would Mike Babcock leave the Red Wings to coach Michigan? Absurd.

That would be like Brady Hoke leaving Michigan for Wayne State. According to a Detroit News article, Babcock has told Red he could see himself in college coaching after he is done with the NHL. That has led to some wild speculation by Darren Dreger which has in turn cranked up the speculation wheels of the fans. Babcock isn't leaving the Wings to replace Red. Of course Mel would be trumpeted as the top candidate, but why not Billy Powers? I think Billy Muckalt would be a possibility. Bennett has done a terrific job out east. I think Cole being a Spartan could be seen as a negative were he to become a candidate. Too many money guys would voice their objections. It certainly would be an interesting process for sure.

It was also be the same if Andy Murray goes from the NHL for Western Michigan University.

Andy didn't leave the NHL for Western. Andy was fired by the St Louis Blues midway through the 2009-10 season. He sat out 2010-11 and then took over at Western for the 2011-12 season. There's a huge difference between an active NHL head coach leaving for a college job and a guy who was fired a year and a half earlier taking the college job.

But it is still a step down going from the NHL to college hockey.
He had many years in the NHL.

In 10 years in the NHL Andy won one playoff series.

I will have to check but i think it was with LA when they beat the Wings in 2001.

Don't put any eggs in the Mel Pearson basket. As long as David Brandon is the AD, that's a non-starter.

I've got Red on my 2014 Dead Pool, right along with Fidel Castro and George H W Bush.

Nothing personal, just business.

why is that?

Mel isn't going anywhere for a couple years. Between his contract/buyout etc, and how early it is in his tenure...just not going to happen. I was talking with a few Techies this weekend (ShirtlessGuy being the most knowledgeable about the situation) and it'd take a minor miracle to get Mel to leave.
