Fridgen certainly lost recruits due to the uncertainty of our ability to continue offering athletic scholarships, but this continued after that had passed and only got worse as far as I recall.

There was an academic transition when Shirley Jackson arrived which affected the incoming requirements of student-athletes. There was also the lost continuity of assistant coaches due to turnover and the lack of budget support to get quality assistant coaches.....not like the resources available today.

Appert has to deal with a much superior ECAC to the one Fridgen coached against.

I would respectfully disagree. Back then, very few players left early for the pros. Overall, most leagues were stronger, with of course the odd exception. Besides, that's a tough comparison (league wise). I'm surprised you would make a statement like that!

Absolutely false!

NCAA championships by ECAC schools while Fridgen coached - zero. NCAA championships while Appert has been coaching - two and counting. There still aren't many ECAC players leaving early, I think 6 to date and only 3 last year.

None of that changes my opinion that RPI still should be performing better, but I regard the ECAC as stronger overall and in comparison to the other leagues than they were when Fridgen coached .

I agree that comparing different eras is difficult and subjective. Mostly the teams have changed. In Fridgen's years Cornell, Harvard, Clarkson and even RPI were at or near the top of the standings most years and Brown, Dartmouth and at times Union and Army seemed to be at the bottom of the league most years.

When the NCAA threatened to take away scholarships SLU, Clarkson and RPI lost some recruiting battles. The past couple of years all the shifting of teams to different leagues may have cost some schools a recurit or two and that may have benfitted the ECAC because of its stability. I certainly can't prove that, but it is a gut feeling. The ECAC is enjoying a moment at the summit of college hockey. I think the Big 10 will rise to the top in the next few years and the ECAC will come back to the pack. It is a natural ebb and flow. Unfortunately, one of the few constants the past dozen years has been RPI's inability to advance past the 1/4-finals of the ECAC Tournament, but hope springs eternal .

Lake State would be very lucky to have him. A great person and an good hockey sense. It's always nice to see a fellow classmate succeeding.

For about the first time in four issues. :p Of course, I could always put updates about me, but I'm not that exciting.

The reason for more parity is partly early defections. Not as much from the ECAC as other leagues and other powerhouse teams. This has helped the ECAC close the gap. What a poor barometer saying that Appert is coaching against a far superior ECAC compared to Fridgen.

I debated about whether this ordering of 57 of the 59 college arenas was worth posting http://www.stadiumjourney.com/news/04-14-2014/608/2014-college-hockey-arena-rankings. Any ranking that puts the HFH (36) behind Messa (28) and ahead of Lynah (42) seems just wrong to me, but they did include various categories, and I do agree that the food in the HFH isn't that good and there isn't much nearby to do. The individual link to the HFH was posted here before.

For those who are discontented with OGC, I do empathize....at the same time, I also do notice a striking dearth of alternatives.

I am actually jealous of your OOC schedule. It was Yale's pairwise Achilles heel last year, and this coming year is more of the same. If RPI posts a .750 win percentage with that schedule, it would be quite an accomplishment and may propel the team to the NCAA's if they can do it

I'll be shocked if they get 5.5 out of 14.
