Schurhammer with his first career goal on the PP gives Maine the 1-0 lead midway through the second. Normand on the assist.

and Maine gives it right back as puck deflects off Bill Normand's stick and in....

UVM gets a third in the last minute. Maine will start the third period with a full 2 minute pp. 3-1 after 2

Maine was miserable on the power play (1-10), due in large part to UVM's tenacious penalty kill. They attacked like it was 5 on 5. Santaguida made some great saves and Ouellette seemed to struggle a bit. Vermont didn't use the neutral zone trap like last night. Maine's passes at times appear to be in slow motion as the puck travels between players and in some cases way too much passing (like in the last couple of minutes of the game). Maine did play hard and they should improve steadily as the season progresses.

Gendron was none too pleased with the team's complacency and lack of urgency.

Classy move by Coz: he could have easily called a QB sneak or two at that point which would likely have yielded a 40-27 final, and made the win look lopsided for the sake of the poll. (Good for him that he didn't; I sometimes think that some of you young fellas on here don't appreciate what a great a job he's done in Orono over the years.)

Certainly wasn't any "easy" game. Maine is quick and athletic on D, but not particularly physical, and they've had some issues dealing with smash-mouth North-to-South running offenses like Albany's this season.

Still, I predict that the Bears steam-roll URI, and have a great shot at UNH... They could finish 11-0 in FCS play and garner home-field throughout the pre-NC PS.

                      (Anybody see that coming?)

He typically says that after a game. I saw a game last night where Maine played very hard. One of the goals that Vermont scored came off a puck hitting a Maine stick on the ice. Another UVM score was from a bouncing puck in front of the net with both teams fighting for possession (mad scramble). That's part of hockey. Maine didn't execute at times when they needed to, in my opinion it wasn't due to complacency.

The Black Bears fell into complacency after taking the lead, according to Gendron. "We thought we had it won. That's how we played for the rest of the second period, and that's essentially how the game was lost.
TIMMAY-time. You've got the lead, so now play cautious and don't expend too much energy.

Granted there's a lot of new players on this years roster, but it's hard to eliminate some of those tendencies that have been so ingrained into the players over the years. But Red's working hard on changing that mindset, and it'll happen.
What kind of cheese are you planning to put on top?

They were commenting on the radio that Coz is very respected around the conference because he won't run up the score. He did the same thing against UMass in a 24-14 win when he very easily could have made in 31-14. He is teaching his players that there are things in life more important than style points and opinion polls.

As for a seed and home field...the GPI (BCS for Div. I-AA) has them #3 behind NDSU and Eastern Ill. The Dolphin computer formula has them #1 overall. After the top 2 the computers are all over the place, but Maine is the third-best team by average. Truly a remarkable accomplishment. Gotta beat Rhody and UHN to finish out the season.
