Are the amount of scholarships available to athletes by each school controlled by the school or the NCAA rules?
I need the $2 lesson on US university scholarships.

The NCAA allows 18 full scholarships for mens ice hockey. It's up to the school/coach on how they want to divvy up those scholarships.

      Here's a FAQ Link

Yup... 18 max. QU gives the full 18 but it's my understanding there are no "full rides". How it's gets divvied up is obviously held close to the chest.

I'm fairly sure there is at least one full ride. No, not my kid....not my grandson....don't even know him.

It usually works along the lines of 12 fulls and 12 halves.

I've heard of that, but not at QU. It's been 3-4 years since I had my last scholarship conversation with anyone but at that time I was led to believe that our kids typically get 1- or 2-yr deals (that are renewable). Anything longer than that gets risky because of injuries, transfers, departures, etc. It's also my understanding that if a scholarship player leaves school, that scholarship is not available for someone else (i.e. Quenneville this season).

I really don't know how any of this stuff works at QU. Most of what I'm saying is just my best guess based on comments and conversations I've heard.

I don't know too much about our scholarship situation but I do know Quenneville's is available for this year and it's a full one

I'm quite sure there are partial scholarships at QU. There was a walk on playing a few years ago.

I have to believe some of the higher end players are on full rides. That is one of the ways to win recruiting battles against the power schools.

Anyone who criticizes a coach's character based on a couple post-game press comments should read the article below about another slightly successful coach who is frequently (and IMO unfairly) misunderstood. Bottom line is unless you are personally close to the coach or the running of the team you probably don't have a clue what a coach's personality is really like. Union's Rick Bennett often gives terse post-game responses and earlier this season threw two of the best players on the team under the bus. I also happen to know that Rick is a great guy and his players like/respect him and would skate through a brick wall for him.

I wanted to chime in on Bennett. He is one of my favorite coaches to talk to. He is a little short with his answers and a very imposing figure, but in the four or five times we've talked he has always blamed himself if something went wrong. I was floored the first time he said "We didn't play well tonight and that starts with me not getting the guys ready." Not something you hear often.

Brendan Whittet is a really hot ticket. Pretty funny in press conference and overall just a nice guy. Very fiery behind that bench though.

I didn't print this in my recap last year, but I had to interview Coach Schafer after game 2 against QU. I was the only one to talk to him. So here I am doing a one-on-one interview and I said something around the line of "Coach, I saw you and Rand having words across the ice midway through the second period, what was that all about?" He looks at me and says sort of angrily, "You want to know what I said!?" I then panicked, pooped myself and peed myself (in that order) and said "yes."

His response, "I told Rand he was being a ********** d***." I couldn't believe he said it. We continued the interview and I said "Can I print what you said about Rand?" He kind of smirked and said, "Ah, I think I got a little carried away." We agreed we'd leave it out. I was just amazed with how candid he was.

No one else really sticks out in my mind - Rand is just Rand to me. Just never ask who tomorrow's goalie will be.

Hey CanadaKen.....Any idea on why Landon Smith the league leader in goals and points in the BCHL has not committed anywhere yet. He is a US import player and 20 years old. Eliteprospects originally had him going to Denver but that looks to have changed as College Hockey Inc and Heisenbergs list no longer have him going to Denver. Any info would be great.

As well he should, especially on the days he refuses to do a post-game interview. I remember a day at QU he had his SID come into the press conference room with a two-sentence statement.
