Followed up with a shutout

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – In his second start for the Penguins, Eric Hartzell made 25 saves for the first shutout of his American Hockey League career and helped Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to a 1-0 victory over the Binghamton Senators at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.



It was a scoreless tie between the Penguins and Senators until 4:14 remained in the second period.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton defenseman Philip Samuelsson was able to hold in a puck at the Binghamton blueline and push a pass down the right wall to Brian Gibbons. The Penguins center hit Harry Zolnierczyk on the far post for a backhand shot over the blocker of Senators goalie Nathan Lawson. The goal was Zolnierczyk’s team-leading ninth of the season.

Hartzell and the Penguins penalty kill ensured the lead stood, denying the Senators on three power play chances in the third period. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton finished 6-for-6 on the penalty kill.

While shorthanded the Penguins nearly went ahead, 1-0, at the end of the first frame, but a backhander by Gibbons was determined to have crossed the goal line after time expired.

I think the Jones' really bring out the best in their linemate. Anas needs that more than Peca in my opinion but I still lean to this years too.

I agree Anas benefits more as a freshman being teamed with the Jones'. He has proven skills and should only get better from the experience.

I guess a good follow up question would be how many points would Peca have if he were with the Jones'. I know its impossible to tell just thought it was interesting to think about and hear opinions

Would he have as many points as Anas? I don't think so, but I think the line might be better. Peca and the Jones just click whenever together on the ice. All 3 have such a good sense of where the puck is, where its going, and where it needs to be.

Peca will be fine over the long term. All I can say is remember March 31, 2013.

As for Sam Anas you have a special player in the making. To see someone that young....a freshman, doing that well, is truly rare. I don't have the time to research it, but I'd be curious to know what the freshman scoring record is as I would guess he certainly is on pace to break it. As for player of the year.....that's a tall order for a freshman. With upper class players like Gardreaux being a Jr. and Carey being a senior it would be difficult for a freshman to break through that soon. He clearly is talented and (hoping for you he sticks around) your record books like they will be re-written.

I really hope you mean the Quinnipiac or ECAC freshman scoring record. Otherwise, you should look up some guy by the name of Paul Kariya: 25-75-100 in 39 games. That's 80% more points per game for the season than Anas has so far. For Anas to catch up to his production in the rest of the regular season, he'll need 68 points in the remaining 19 regular season games (a pace of 3.5 points per game, more than 2.5x his current output) and then he'd still need 2.6 points per game throughout the playoffs to keep pace.

Boy, wouldn't that be something to see...

Also known as the "JC Ruid Effect." If you just said, "who?" then that proves the point.

Ruid was the 3rd guy on the Martin St. Loius-Eric Perrin line at UVM from 95-97; he had 55 points his Junior season but never more than a cup of coffee in the AHL. As the Harvard broadcaster said during one game, "My grandmother would score 30 points on a line with St. Louis and Perrin."

Nah, I think Tavares would've done okay without Moulson.

Besides:
1) Moulson made it to the NHL while not playing with Taveres
2) Taveres was only 1/3 of that line, not 2/3.
3) It's early, obviously, but Moulson's still putting up pretty decent points for the Sabres (11 in his first 15 games)

Ruid couldn't even crack the AHL - he is definitely the poster boy for the phenomenon in my mind.

UNH's coach Mac was recruiting in BC 20 years ago. Hard to imagine he was the only one.

That's kind of why I worded it the way I did...."pretty well" gets me off the "only coach ever to" hook.

Do you think Quinnipiac's first alum in the NHL has graduated, still playing or yet to be recruited?

I think Hartzell could have a cup of coffee but our first full timer is yet to be recruited. Thoughts?

I think that it possibly could be Connor Clifton if his development continues upwards but its likely a yet to be recruited player.

I've heard a lot of people mention JST because of his size. Connor Clifton will likely get a sniff as well. Hartzell might see the big dance, but he's got a ton of talent in front of him to get through.

If we're going to have a full-time impact player in the NHL, I'd say he hasn't seen the ice at the Bank yet.
