Any Air Force fans here? If so, do you know how the team travels? Air Force plane or commercial? I assume the former. If so, where do they land for this weekend? BDL or Westover?

Surprising results all around tonight. No one called AIC to beat Air Force. 2 people called UConn over RIT, 2 called the Bentley/Niagara tie, and 4 called Canisius over Holy Cross. Everyone (12 people this week) called Mercyhurst over Army though.

Sweet. Love it. I helped design the engines for that plane. I am guessing they went into Westover or the Air Guard base 10 miles away.

              While the ice is quiet:

              These are 2008/2009 figures

              TEAM TRAVEL

All academy programs’ travel for games and events is funded by appropriated funds, save for football. Mainly because of the size and unique travel requirements of the football team, its travel is funded primarily by non-appropriated funds.

Team travel expenses include airfare, lodging, rental cars

charter buses and meals for all away competitions. The athletic department’s intercollegiate logistics department coordinates all team travel, working directly with the academy’s commercial ticket office.

              Team Annual Budget

              Ice Hockey $231,000

              Total Academy Team travel cost:

              $3,500,000

and in case you wondering.....Ice Hockey (Frank Serratore) $128,000

The practical answer is that all USAFA teams will travel by "MilAir" when possible. They will publish their schedules and requirements (people and cargo) AF-wide and invite active, reserve, and guard units to provide airlift as part of those units' normal flying operations. So, if a C-17 crew from somewhere needs X hours of flying time for standard proficiency requirements, they'll look at the USAFA schedules and see what they can do to help. This is convenient but NOT luxurious. We don't have to worry about security and getting through airports, BUT imagine flying on a C-130 form Colo Springs to Anchorage and Fairbanks for a set of games--non-stop. Cold inside, web-belt seats, dark... It does give our cadets a glimpse of the Real Air Force (RAF), though. I've traveled several times with a variety of our teams as a faculty member (we take tutors from the faculty on most trips) and flown on C-130s, KC-135s, C-17s, KC-10s, and (long ago) C-141s and C-5s. C-17s are by FAR the favored plane. It's big, clean, new, fast, and warm. Equipment carriage is another advantage. I've traveled with our track team several times and it's very easy to load pole vault poles onto a C-anything--not so much a Southwest Airlines 737.

When the teams fly on the planes, the crews have fun, too. Cadets and coaches get to take turns going into the cockpit to experience the take-off and landing first hand and they sit in the cockpit jumpseats throughout the flight.

If no MilAir flight is available, then the teams will travel by commercial airliner. That's pretty costly, but smaller teams often travel that way (golf, gymnastics etc). for a team like hockey, it takes a LONG time to get all of the bags cleared each way, compared to your bus just rolling up to the C-17 and everyone throwing their own bags from plane to bus.

Wow. Neat!! Any info on which of three airports they used? I am guessing Westover.

No clue. They'll often fly into the private side of even large commercial airports, which is why you'll occasionally see a C-17 at Logan. I've flown into Sky Harbor in Phoenix and McCarren in LV on MilAir flights with our track team. If they can find "parking space" and service (fuel), then can land anywhere.
