  • Team Canada U18/U22/ Centralized Olympic Roster

Hockey Canada has released their August Camp U18 and U22 Rosters. The U22's look deep in talent and 13 of them will advance to a second stage of summer camp and stay and compete with the centralized Olympic hopefuls. Looks to be very competitive!

Rosters can be found at www.hockeycanada.ca

I noticed Maschmeyer, the goaltender for Harvard, was not on the U22 list. Is she injured? I thought she was a strong contender and near the top at that position in Hockey Canada circles.

Lots of quality NCAA athletes on the list and many schools well represented.

Just to confirm, the 13 development players that are chosen will just join the olympic hopefuls for part of the summer to train and play a few games right? i.e. they won't miss the entire college season like the other 27 players will?

I was wondering the same thing. I was under the impression that HC centralized 27 players as per earlier communications from this spring. Now the appearance is that 13 of the 40 players from this development camp will join them. Parameters and duration are not clear in the latest communique.

Here is the dev camp article:

And here is the spring article about centralization:

The "joining" is to bring the camp numbers to 40 allowing two teams which will train together and then play in a three game set against one another. This is in lieu of the customary U22 series against the US.

              Not following your logic.

The development camp of 40 players is like the defacto U22 camp. It does NOT include any of the 27 players already designated for Centralization. The 40 players in the development camp will play a 3 game series amongst themselves in August, during the same time frame you see the U22 series with the US in other years.

Communique suggests they will then take 13 players out of this group and add them to the centralized roster camp. What is next for those 13 is not clear to me.

Kelly Terry is referred to in the press release which also says there were 24 forwards selected, but the roster page only lists 23 forwards and Kelly isn't on the list.

It is all in the wording of the sentence suggesting the 13 will be centralized yet I have been informed that that is not the case. The 13 will be selected from the main U22 Camp and will join the Centralized team for the following week for practice and intra-squad games and the 13 will be released. It has not been stated what the make-up of those 13 will be but likely will be based on need to fill out two rosters for games.

Why does the USA not have a U22 squad. Seems like a no-brainer to have a development team of the up and coming players which may also produce a few 'diamonds in the rough' so to speak?!

This has been discussed before, and the primary theory is because there's no IIHF championship at the U22 level. The U.S. forms a development team only for the sake of playing their Canadian counterparts. Additionally, Hockey Canada sends their development team to play the European senior teams in the MLP/Meco Cup; the U.S. doesn't participate in that tournament.

Hopefully it is a little more open ended than that. If one or two of those 13 really stands out in the following camp with the centralized players, I would hope that HC would consider adding them to centralization.

So true! It would certainly make sense for them to do so and really creates a lot of incentive for a positive performance from the U22, from the 13, and from the 27 in camp knowing you could get bumped out of place. Sounds like it will be quite competitive and interesting.
