Was checking out the food trucks - gotta love A. Judge's after 5 cupcakes:

After 5:00 Cupcakes

(Beer, liquor, and liqueur flavored cupcakes. PLEASE NOTE: While there isn’t enough alcohol in an individual cupcake to cause intoxication, it is still recommended these only be consumed by adults 21 and older.)

Baileys Chocolate Stout: Chocolate Stout cupcake and Bailey’s buttercream frosting

Bourbon Bacon Chocolate: Bourbon chocolate cupcake and frosting topped with bacon - are you kidding me? this is heaven

Bourbon Chocolate Walnut: Bourbon chocolate cupcake and frosting topped with walnuts

Buttery Nipple: Butterscotch cupcake loaded with Butter Snapps and Bailey’s buttercream frosting

Chocolate Stout: Chocolate Stout cupcake and frosting

Cranberry Champagne: Champagne cake with cranberry frosting

Irish Car bomb: Chocolate Stout cupcake with whisky soaker and Bailey’s buttercream frosting

Irish Coffee: Vanilla-espresso cupcake and whiskey whipped cream topping

Mint Julep: Vanilla-mint cupcake and whiskey buttercream frosting topped with a mint leaf

Mojito: Vanilla-mint cupcake and rum buttercream frosting topped with a mint leaf

Monkey Tang: Straight to Ale’s Monkeynaut IPA cupcake and Tang frosting

Pina Colada: Coconut-pineapple cupcake and rum buttercream frosting

Whiskey Vanilla Caramel: Whisky-vanilla cupcake and whisky-caramel buttercream frosting

Do they deliver? Wow, I want at least one of everything. This would give a whole new meaning to tailgating!!!!!

Wondering if there are any places you guys would recommend for staying in Huntsville. Our group likes to stay in hotels close enough to walk to the rink so we can drink and not worry about cabs.

I used to a lot of business in Huntsville, enough to allow me to get season tickets to UAH (in addition to my home team in Denver) and actually go to half the games. I have stayed a lot of places, and the best places to stay really depends on what is going on that weekend or where people go after the games. The three mentioned by fangers are absolutely correct, and you cannot go wrong at the Embassy Suites. Downtown is indeed fluid as Geoff indicated. I remember going to a couple of places early in the season and come March, be like a ghost town. I have also stayed out of town and near the school, but next time I go I will stay at Embassy.

Would appear we have picked up another commitment: http://collegehockeyinc.com/stats/commitments.php
Roberts Smits from Selects Hockey Academy U18 at South Kent School. Unique deal they have at South Kent. Becoming the Shattuck of the East. An NHL draft pick came from the school last year.

Appears to be a big kid and a 95 birth date. Along with Rotenberger, we are starting to get commits from younger players which is huge for a growing program.

Great to see us getting recruits so far out, good sign for the future. Interesting twist south kent is doing there - traditionally you see pre/post teams put together from the NE prep league so they can compete in USA Hockey Nationals. They play before/after the prep season, but there plenty of politics involved in getting on a team.

They list Smits as a 14-15 recruit, where Rotenberger is 15-16 (he'll play one more year of Thunder AAA in Atlanta and play at least a year of juniors). I would love to see us get more commitments to fill the program down the line, especially if we can even up the recruiting classes a little bit. We'll be replacing six juniors in two years (Pierce, Reid, Carpenter, Vanderlugt, Reinhardt, Strukoff), but if we can get it to where we're replacing seven or eight guys a season and can know a year in advance who 2-4 of those incoming guys like me, we'll be in even better shape. I think that they want to keep the roster above 25 to have guys fighting for ice time and have depth for injuries; that's going to result in guys getting fed up and transferring/leaving school/whatever. We used to see that under Ross all the time.

Speaking of Ross, I hate to be the one to break news to you that AJ Baker had a heart attack a couple of weeks ago and passed away. Bakes was a big part of the title years and a big reason that we got kids from Ontario at that time. I know that a lot of our alumni have sadness in their hearts right now.

He was always available to lend me a hand while I was there, always with a smile.

Downtown Huntsville is becoming a "happening" place, especially on weekends; plus, Thursday is the new Friday. There are actually lines to get into some of the clubs.

Yeah, all of this has me wondering if, should I find a job here, I might move downtown. I guess it would depend on money and where I was working. I'm kinda tired of Madison.

Great to see Smitty get a commit. I was talking on the phone with a player from Selects on Monday & he told me Smitty was at UA-H for a visit and 24 hrs later he commits. Got to see a lot of him here @ Albany Academy when South Kent would play in the Ryder Cup and always wondered why he was still uncommitted. Good luck to him and your program.

Thanks for the links, I'll check them out. Couple years back I stayed downtown, walked all over but found very little. So I've resorted to stating out on university, but I plan to stay downtown this trip.

Saw these two interviews today. Pretty good info on the recruits and a bit of a look into how Corbett and the staff seem to be going about their business.
Here's McHugh's interview: http://www.collegehockeynews.com/news/2013/10/09_commitment_qa_ala-huntsvilles.php
Dunno how much interest the schools he listed actually had in him, but regardless, it is pretty impressive that he decided to come to UAH instead of those other more well-known schools. Also must be a smart kid considering some of those teams.

Here's Smits interview:http://www.collegehockeynews.com/news/2013/10/16_commitment_qa_ala-huntsvilles.php
Also interesting that we won out for this guy. I like this little European pipeline we've got going on.

Also, I've been following Rotenberger and the Thunder U18s closely. He needs to start picking up the points! For a kid his size on D, I want to see more from him on the scoresheet. But, I understand he is captain on a team that is ranked top 15 nationally. His character is probably off the charts.

Would love to hear any other good insider info on the team and recruits. Let me know what y'all think of this stuff.

I've interviewed Rotenberger for a piece I'll be running on uahhockey.com (because I can't let UAHstatman do everything) sometime. I have to re-write the editorial calendar due to a bunch of things that happened on my end. Anyhow, Teddy came across as very composed for a high school senior.

This all I could find on A. J.
http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/dfw/obituary.aspx?pid=167350821
After he left for "BIG D" in 2000, I always appreciated seeing his "keeping in touch" e-mails and his continued interest in UAH. It looks like we last communicated in 2005 when I was looking ideas for an alternative CHA tournament site. A.J. thought we should try Frisco TX. We weren't Facebook friends, but it's interesting to see that he became friends with Bud McLaughlin 11 hours ago. :( Then while stalking Bud on Facebook, I enjoyed seeing that he still communicates with Steve Kornya, one of the nicest people I've ever met. I remember Steve's broadcast of UAH's first games against a D-1 opponent (at Air Force). We got to know Steve a little bit during UAH's first trip to Omaha by first sharing some of our travel rations during the flight. Brent Richardson of Uniglobe Travel organized a group tour (including a shuttle bus from the Ramada Inn where we stayed) for those games. Thanks A.J. for bringing the names of all of these fine UAH hockey people to mind.

As a Rangers fan, I feel compelled to keep you all abreast of the recent development that Henrik Lundqvist is day-to-day with an injury and Cam Talbot is the presumed starter tomorrow against the Flyers.
