Tom Healey of the Rutland Herald reported today that Alex Todd was leaving Castleton and going to D1 Nebraska-Omaha. I personally thought Coach Todd did an outstanding job that brought Castleton from an 0-25 team to one of the strongest D3 teams in New England. During his time at Castleton the college purchased Spartan Arena and made it into an outstanding D3 hockey rink. I liked going to Castleton games which were always competitive.

Big question who is going to take his place and keep the program quality at a high level. My first choice if I was the AD would be the assistant at Plattsburgh, however, with its own campus rink I would think lots of quality coaches would be coming out of the woodwork to go after the job. Castleton has not been successful in getting past Plattsburgh and Norwich but maybe with a new coach they can reach that goal. But this news was still a shocker to me. I would post the Rutland Herald link but can not do so since site is behind a pay wall. I guess things are never dull in ECAC E.

I'm pretty sure Coach Moffat has had offers in the past but he's got a pretty good gig going with Coach Emery at Plattsburgh.

My first thought when I heard the news was Dominick Dawes...

Should be an interesting job search.

I was thinking of Dawes too and he does seem to get quality recruits to the middle of nowhere as far as D3 hockey is concerned in PA. But coach Todd recruiting skills will be hard to be replaced.

Todd noted the opportunity to coach with a legend like Dean Blais was something he couldn't pass up (http://www.buckys5thquarter.com/wisconsin-badgers-mens-hockey/2013/7/12/4506444/alex-todd-nebraska-omaha-assistant-coach-dean-blais-mavericks-uno-nchc)...

Blais said he initially offered the job to former Ohio State coach Mark Osiecki (http://www.omaha.com/article/20130712/MAVS/707129888/1001)...

Dawes is coaching in a better conference. Castleton would be a step backwards.

...the horse is buried in an Adrian thread circa 2007-08

Why would Dawes be the first name you thought of? I know Neumann isn't in the best spot geographically for D3 hockey but the school is serious about it's athletics and has built millions of dollars worth of new facilities on their campus (no rink though) in the last 4 years. If Dawes left for another D3 school I think it would only be for Norwich, not Castleton.

Maybe we can glue the two threads together?

There is no opening at Norwich, unless things have changed since I moved, Castleton is as close to Norwich as you can get and be in DIII hockey.

How do come to that conclusion?

Not sure why Dawes would leave. Except for money because NU pays very little

Actually NU pays McShane pretty well - Neumann, not so much. Everybody knows NU(R) stands for Norwich, not Neumann - find your own set of initials you Johnny-come-latelys :D

Possibility of more $$$, automatic bid into NCAA Tournament, closer to home for wife, same conference as his alma mater...

I was under the impression that Norwich was one of the better paying D3 jobs??
Am I wrong????
