  • Yankee Stadium Set to Host Two Winter Classic Games

    From The New York Times
    By MICHAEL S. SCHMIDT
The Winter Classic will be expanded to six games next season, including two at Yankee Stadium involving all three metropolitan-area teams, according to a person briefed on matter but not authorized to speak publicly.

The Canadian network TSN reported that the Rangers are tentatively scheduled to play the Devils at the Stadium on Jan. 26, followed by a Rangers-Islanders game Jan.29 — both games preceding the Super Bowl at MetLife Stadium on Feb. 3.

The first game of the Classic will be held New Year’s Day between the Detroit Red Wings and the Toronto Maple Leafs at Michigan Stadium, before an expected crowd of more than 100,000.

According to TSN, the Anaheim Ducks and the Los Angeles Kings are tentatively set to meet Jan. 25 at Dodger Stadium. The series would conclude with a Pittsburgh-Chicago game set for Soldier Field on March 1, and an Ottawa-Vancouver game set for B.C. Place on March 2.
...Hope there will be opportunities for local HS and College teams to play in the Bronx as was the case at Fenway - but anything close to the Super Bowl date could be a logistical nightmare - team hotels in Albany??? Outdoor game in Dodger Stadium....discuss.

That's overkill - the fact that it is one event at one venue is what makes it special. Maybe a few games, but having it in multiple locations dilutes the "coolness" factor. Never expect Bettman to do something that makes sense. It was "The" Winter Classic.

The LA thing is just too weird for words. I assume it is feasible, but the point of the outdoor game was that it was being played out in the cold in the winter weather in places that are used to winter weather.

The Winter Classic was the goose that laid golden eggs, and Bettman and Co. are going to kill it to make a quick buck.

Manhattanville would be the school if a D-III hockey team were to get the nod. Perhaps against Skidmore?

Agreed. And if there is any humidity in the air during that contest, you can forget about seeing thorugh the glass (assuming there will be glass, of course). Reference the days before Hobart had 4 walls... for many of the late-season games there was so much condensation on the glass, we could not see the game. We would hope that someone would get checked in front of us so the hit would wipe the glass clean!

None of them are exactly local, but it'd be cool to see some SUNYAC teams playing in New York City. There have to be lots of alumni in the city too

Yankee Stadium with a seating capacity of 50,291 might be able to handle the fans, maybe even give Manhattanville a bright spot since they are likely to be without the Playland Ice Casino until 2014.

I guess you guys haven't heard, but Rochester is doing a week long outdoor rink event at Frontier Field. I'd imagine it's possible that Nazareth or Geneseo play a game there. RIT/Niagara is already set.

And RIT women will be playing Clarkson.

The Amerks will have a game as well as some high schools. There will be lots of available ice time as the complete schedule has not been finalized.

This. sucks. (For the NHL's sake)

I'm all about the experiences for high school and college kids but keep it to one game for the NHL. The outdoor game has completely lost its luster.

                      Bettman sucks.

True story. The whole point of the Winter Classic was that it was a once a year thing. The NHL did a good job of promoting the rivalries between the teams and letting them come to a boil in the weeks before the game (with a lot of help from HBO). The NHL is ruining all of that by playing multiple games and it's all because of greed. By doing this the NHL is ruining one of the only cool mainstream novelties it has. See how much people care about the outdoor games in a year or two. "Oh, they're playing outside again? Who cares?"

Sometimes I hate the fact that I'm a hockey fan because I can't stand this stupid league or Bettman at all.

Two games in Yankee Stadium would be okay -two of Isles/Rangers/Devils playing each other and the one that isn't playing the Bruins or Flyers would make sense. Going beyond that to play in multiple locations is foolish.
