Charlie Vasaturo, injured late in the season, is back on the ice.

With three veteran defenseman gone, Vasaturo could play an important role next year. He was coming into his own before the injury. That is great news and hope Charlie comes back at full strength. Agree that he was playing very well when he got hurt. I don't know what his injury was but from seeing him on crutches in AC it looked pretty serious. He is absolutely one of the keys for next season to be a success. If he can be a 4th solid d-man with Bodie, Ghost & Gingras it will take pressure off of the freshmen and Boyle. He's also the biggest d-man in a group that could be rather undersized if Taylor gets major icetime as expected. Which is actually one of the other keys.. Bodie and Ghost need to hit the weights & the protein shakes this summer and add 10-15 pounds of muscle. Having 3 d-men 165-170# could be trouble..

Charlie looked great at the golf tournament last month. I think our D is generally undersized and needs to compensate with speed, agility and smarts. Hoping to see Ghost put on 20 lbs could be a mixed blessing if the Flyers take notice.

No chance he is putting on 20 lbs or for that matter 15
Maybe 7 or 8, maybe.. He will get wider as he gets older not from drinking shakes
He is fine and least of the teams worries.

More insight from Cornwall on Pontarelli - pretty good read... http://www.standard-freeholder.com/2013/06/20/plenty-to-learn-for-pontarelli

Some great quotes from Pontarelli's coach, Ian MacInnis.

Found this quote on Pontarelli's time at Muskegon's tryout camp :http://blog.insidemuskegonlumberjacks.com/search?updated-max=2013-06-15T14:45:00-04:00&max-results=7

Michael Pontarelli (5th Round Pick at 63rd Overall – USHL Phase 2 Draft) – The first that would probably come to everyone’s mind is offense with this guy, and I don’t blame you after the stats he put up with the Cornwall Colts of the Central Canadian Hockey League that led him to being the Most Valuable Player. However, Pontarelli does have a defensive side to his game as I have seen numerous times so far during camp. Pontarelli possesses a Pavel Datsyuk-like back-check where he his stick lifting ability to strip the puck on the defensive end is second-to-none. A smoother skater, the Quebec native just finds a way to get the puck on net and his stickhandling is first rate (reminds me of Lumberjacks Forward Frederik Tiffels to a certain extent).

Probably not a good sign for Keith Kinkaid that Devils traded for Cory Schneider.

That's a pretty damaging blow. As long as he's in NJ, hard to imagine him ever becoming more of a backup with Schneider the long-term guy.

Also of interest, Philly took a defenseman 11th overall, Samuel Morin.

Schneider only has two years left on his contract so there is still hope for Kinkaid as he's at least one more year away fr being NHL ready.

Former Union star Mario Valery-Trabucco recently signed in Sweden: http://bit.ly/14HSpGS

Kinkaid still has opportunity in NJ. Schneider didn't exactly lockdown the goaltending position in Vancouver, one of the best teams in hockey, which is why he was traded. If nothing else, there will be a backup opportunity very soon, as they are not going to keep Hedberg forever.

Welsh is the one that is really in the wrong organization now. The Canes drafted a very highly touted center at #5 and there was already a logjam at the position with the two Staals and Juri Tlusty. Welsh could be lucky to see icetime in the AHL, as there are several prospects in the organization at the position. I don't know if they would try him at wing (he did play it in juniors), but a change of scenery might be good. Not sure how long his contract was.

I believe Kinkaid is in the last of year of his three year deal. I still think he would have been better served by staying at least one more year, but obviously he had a different idea. Welsh has one more year and his is a one way contract for roughly $1M. This is a critical year for both. I think MVT is prospering in Europe and hope he continues to do so.

Blackhawk's goalie Corey Crawford was a second round draft pick who spent 4 years in Major Junior A and four solid years in the AHL so by comparison Kincaid still has time provided they still have faith in him.
I don't think a team like NJ thinks they can have too many good/great goalies. I believe Crawford is 28 and this is his 3rd NHL year.

I believe I read that Lindholm is expected to play in Sweden next season, so Welsh should have every opportunity to earn a spot with the Canes out of camp, without the young Swede taking a spot at center. Worst case scenario, he will gain more exposure and experience for interested teams to see him.

How will Union do next year? It seems to me that Yale, Dartmouth, Brown, RPI and Cornell and Colgate are going to be getting better. What about St. Lawrence, Qint, Clarkson, Harvard, Princeton? The competition in the ECAC is going to get more fierce ... Does that put us in the middle of the pack? Is our great run over? We are loosing seven. College hockey is getting more and more popular. Will we be able to recruit? Will the new league alignment help or hurt us? Are we in rebuilding year? We were undefeated in Atlantic City but that magic is gone. Is it just impossible to tell until the puck is dropped and we see who is hungry? How important is size? Will we have any 6'2", 225 fore-checkers? Is the great run over? We need more banners !!! :) :)

Last year we were a great home team down the stretch. The year before we were a great away team. What will it be this year? Does the team have the leadership? Who will step up? Who is the Captain?
