  • Bemidji State Beavers: Onto 2013-14 and Beyond

Okay, I have had some time to go over BSU's numbers to see where things stand for next year.

BSU scored 2.06 goal/game and gave up 3.06 goals/game. Not quite the defensive numbers BSU is used to. BSU had 21 ties or one goal games this year, going 4-9-8 in those. I didn't go into boxscores to look, but I know of at least two other games that had empty netters at the end of them.

BSU will graduate nine seniors this year who accounted for 40 of the teams 78 goals and 58 of the 123 assists. So they will take a hit in scoring. Hopefully there are people ready to step it up.

    Back will be:

-Sophomore Goaltender Andrew Walsh who frustrated UND and Minnesota fans at the end of the year. 91.6 save percentage and 2.65 GAA
-Sophomore Danny Mattson, who had a nice streak in the middle of the year. Four goals and 15 assists was good for third on the team this year.
-Freshman Cory Ward had a nice ending to the year and ended up with nine goals and six assists, good for fifth on the team.
    - Junior Radoslav Illo tallied four goals and ten assists, good for seventh.
-Junior Jeff Jubinville ended up eighth with six goals and six assists.
-The top scoring defenseman was sophomore Matt Prapavessis with two goals and nine assists, good for tenth.

The line of freshman Markus Gerbrandt, freshman Phil Brewer and sophomore Mitch Cain looked really good this year. I see only but good things coming from them in the future.

The wild card in this is going to be if any recruits step up right away. I am not going to bank on it just due to the fact that the step from Junior Hockey to College Hockey can be a big one.

So, I would like to think that this year was just an off year for the Beavers. One can play the what if game with every team, but when nearly 60% of your schedule are ties or one goal games, it is a fine line. I think the Beavers will be fine next year, but I kind of agree with everyone else, right now, they are kind of a wild card as no one really knows what to expect. And all of this is compounded with the new WCHA. But I think it is going to be a good thing for BSU and the winning ways will return!

Trying to figure out how to get to Huntsville this October...... Nashville is what, two hours from there? Southwest has some deals right now that would be around $280 flying in on Friday morning and flying out Monday morning. Maybe I can get the wife to agree if I tell her we can spend Sunday doing some sight seeing in Nashville. Hmmm......
All right, I missed a new topic. I brought this over.

Yeah, Nashville is a good place to hop to. Memphis is, too, if you don't mind driving across N. Mississippi. [It's just boring because there's no there there.]

Which hotels are close to the VBC, like walking distance? Thanks!

Right now, I could get a flight into HSV with a compact car and at the Embassy Suites for $660 round trip. Hmmm.......

Embassy Suites [next door], Holiday Inn Downtown [.5mi tops], SpringHill Suites [about the same, behind the VBC, so you'll have to walk around a little bit]. I don't know the bar situation in the Holiday Inn, although we're having the banquet in there on Friday night. The Embassy Suites has a great bar, but it closes at 11p on the weekends. The SpringHill Suites didn't hire me as a bartender [jerks], but their bar is a four-seater and generally not open on the weekends because they're primarily a travel hotel with mid-week occupancy.

Bemidji State also has John Parker coming in this fall. He played at Maine one year before being injured at the beginning of this season. Is he eligible to play this fall? Actually, he has already sat out a year due to his injury. Don't know the NCAA rules on this situation. He was beginning to develop for Maine at the end of last season.

Not sure how that is going to work. I believe he was enrolled at Maine in the fall of 2012.

All I can base it on is David Boehm's path to BSU. He was with UMass, then took a year off and played in the USHL, and then still had to complete one year of "residency" at Bemidji State before being eligible. That "residency" was a red shirt year, so he still had two years of hockey left.

Following the same path for Parker, one year at Maine and a year off with injury/playing in the EJHL, I would think he still has to complete a year of "residency" at Bemidji State before being able to play. Now, if he still has his red shirt left, he can use that and still get three years in with the Beavers.
