  • Clothes revive yarn about old jerseys

The yarn bombing of the statue of a dancer outside The Regent on Broadway in Palmerston North has shaken an earlier example of the art form from the archives.

Palmerston North siblings Kelly, Anna and Tom Pendergrast decorated an advertising bollard in King St in jerseys eight years ago.

Their mum, Lee, said she could not recall them describing it as yarn bombing.

"They did not do it for any other reason than to liven up the street just before Christmas."

Jerseys for the project were bought from op-shops, and were blanket-stitched together.

The cover remained in place for several days, and Mrs Pendergrast did not know who had been responsible for removing it.

Meanwhile, the knitted and crocheted garments put on the "Who's Afraid" statue by a group calling itself "Wooly Riot" are starting to disappear.

Regent Theatre manager Charles Forbes said the yarn bombing had been well done, and it was a shame to see it unravelling.

"We're happy with it as long as it looks good, but it got a bit of a hammering over the weekend."
