Someone needs to show BJugs some tape of Wheeler and Stoa in their last years to inspire him to start playing power-forward hockey. In fact, I would say if Lucia wants to try juggling some more, put Bjugs on wing and tell him to just score goals, and do it from close to the net with a couple D hanging on him. He's probably going to end up on wing in the NHL anyways, so why not give him a try there. I know he is great at faceoffs, but I'd sacrifice that pushed it more.
Good point. I never thought of moving Bjugstad to wing.

1st Half Recap: Goal Scoring

Credit Tom Serratore and Seth Ambroz, who have really stepped up their game as key players for the Gophers thus far, and it shows in their hustle, physicality and 100% improvement in goal scoring over last season at this point. Team goals against (GA) is identical to last season, but goal scoring (GF) as a team and by some key players (Bjugs and Rau) is significantly down this half compared to 2011-12.

Team totals after 17 Games (W-L-T/pts., GF-GA):

2011-12: 12-4-1/25, 72-34
2012-13: 11-3-3/25, 57-34

Goal scoring comparison by players after 17 games (season/goals):

Bjugs: 2011-12/15, 2012-13/8
Haula: 2011-12/9, 2012-13/8
Rau: 2011-12/10, 2012-13/6
*Serratore: 2011-12/3, 2012-13/6
*Budish: 2011-12/4, 2012-13/5
*Ambroz: 2011-12/2, 2012-13/5

Good info Harley, thanks.

Hope Bjugs can get going in the 2nd half, if he does this team should be just fine. The goaltending and D are solid enough for a run but we need to score a little more.

For those who didn't happen to see this, Blake Thompson has announced that he's transferring. No surprise as he hadn't played at all this year.

CC is a tough opponent. Especially if you consider that CC could be tied with UM in the WCHA standings IF they sweep St Cloud this weekend.

I don't think anyone is discounting that. But the Gophers had a 3 goal lead going into the 3rd period and a 1 goal lead with 30 seconds to play. So, a tie on Saturday is a bit disappointing from that aspect. But in the grand scheme of things, you're absolutely right. 3pts on the road against a quality opponent is a good thing.

On a different note, does anybody else hate this stupid break every season as much as i do. Teams just getting rolling and now we get to sit on our hands for 3 weeks. What other sport does this? And no, football does not count. Their regular season is over. Just frustrated, especially with no NHL right now.

If you go to games at Marriucci, I don't see how it's such a big change. You should be used to sitting on your hands.

I was respecting the family's privacy, but since it was posted on GPL as a quote from a news article, I'll mention that Jake Bischoff hasn't been playing due to a concussion, not his first. He's had a few so the family is playing it cautious, having seen a specialist at Mayo. Hope all comes together for him. He also has an option to pursue baseball, from what I hear (haven't seen him play). I'd like to watch him don the M in a couple years, so hope all comes out well. For that matter, I'd like to see him play in Hockey Day in MN and other HS games as well.

Yeah, scary stuff. Hoping he's alright too. Better to take the slow, cautious approach.

Weren't you there last year for the Sioux series? It was actually warm enough where I didn't have to sit on my
hands. Or was that because of my vigorous use of the broom.....

I am re-posting this comment I made at GPL:

One negative trend they need to fix (although how they go about it I am not sure because the correlation seems illogical) - the Gophers are outshooting their opponents by 49, 54 and 59 per period, but the difference in goals scored is +14, +9 and 0. One could argue mental/physical conditioning but you'd think the SOG disparity would similarly trend in the other direction.

I have been saying for a while now that the advanced stats suggest that they should be scoring more, and that scoring will eventually pick up, but it has yet to happen. So I am really at a loss as to why scoring has dropped off even though other indicating statistics (such as puck possession, offensive zone time, and shots on net haven't).

In short, I have no explanation or rationalization.

Well dangit what good are ya then? :D

I think it goes to show that from our couches it's easy to make predictions, analyze and offer suggestions/critiques but in the end not only are we probably going to be wrong quite often, but it won't necessarily mean a hill of squat when it comes to results out on the ice. (probably not a revolutionary observation btw)

Very little :p:D:D

Yeah, I certainly don't claim to be an advanced stats disciple, but there are people out there that swear by them. What really gets me frustrated is when people use them in one instance to discount a team's success, but then completely ignore them in other instances (where they would seem to indicate a team should be scoring more).

Case in point - I know a few people who preached advanced stats from the highest hill when the Wild were in first place in the NHL last December, but not even a mention of these stats when criticizing the Gopher's lack of scoring this season.

As my wife remarked a couple of weeks ago, all they need to do is put it in the net more.

Good point. I never thought of moving Bjugstad to wing.

lucia actually started bjugstad at wing his freshman year. it wasnt until he went to the world juniors that he was moved to center by the world junior coach.. bjugstad looked a lot better at center, florida made a couple comments about him not being played at the right position in minnesota, and lucia kept him at center when he got back to minnesota. not to say they couldnt try him at wing again..

Reading between the lines, sounds like he didn't want to play for the old man.
