Just 17 more days until MSU invades Mariucci (*6:05pm) for the start of the 2012-13 regular season.

Seth Ambroz needs a breakout season. Here's a guy who avg. 20-22-42 over three seasons in the USHL. He went 11 games at one point last season for the Gophers without a point.

He did win the Twin's homerun contest though, hehe.

No.

Must have been Koho then.

And this year, I agree. Should be no higher than #2 right now.

If JDUBBS were here he'd be very upset with that remark.

You should have seen how upset he got with me during a discussion about some of his dad's actions.

I agree. Wouldn't be surprised to see him take some big strides this season.

In his defense, it IS hard to gather points from the penalty box.

I missed that one.

It was actually on GPL last summer.

He seemed to cut back on the stupid penalties as the season wore on. Hopefully that trend continues this season.

What do you need to ask? He's been ill for sometime and this was expected, unfortunately.

Ask? Like how is the family doing? How long has this been going on? I don't live in town anymore and I have not heard from any of my old classmates or neighbors. Sadly, thank you for the response.

In his defense, it IS hard to gather points from the penalty box.

Top 5 Player PEN/PIM (2011-12):

1) Helgeson: 31/70
2) Hansen: 29/58
3) Ambroz: 21/53
4) Budish: 17/45
5) Alt: 16/43

In his defense, ;) Seth Ambroz's penalty total includes 4 penalties @ 19 min. on Nov. 4th against UND, and again 3 penalties @ 6 min. on Jan. 13 against UND. That's 7 penalties @ 25 minutes against a traditionally physical rival.

That's something I would expect from a very physical player like Seth Ambroz against a cheap shot rival like UND, especially since Nov. 4th was his first game against a true WCHA rival. Take away the 25 min. and that puts him in the company of Rau and Bjugstad...not penalty liabilities at all. I hope Helgeson has finally learned how to establish his presence as an enforcer D of sorts without piling up the PIMs...he took some costly penalties last season.

However, I don't see consistent penalty trouble as the reason Ambroz struggled putting up points last season. IMHO, the normal adjustment from USHL to NCAA D1 accounts for a good percentage of the drop and he didn't have the supporting playmaker cast he had in Omaha either (i.e. Haula). Seth is a very physical player who likes to establish net presence and doesn't take any s*t from anyone...he's a fighter. Most importantly, he's got a definitive scoring touch if he is surrounded by players that can support his skill set. After his NHL draft stock went through the floor last year, he came to the Gophers with something to prove. That didn't work out as well as he wanted. But Lucia knows this kid has firepower to bury the puck.

I'd go so far as to bet my ant farm Lucia puts him on a line with players that will help Seth Ambroz have a breakout season for the Gophers in 2012-13. He'll be a PP asset too. Go Gophers!

On another note:

The Gophers are the preseason WCHA favorite in the annual 94X WCHA Preseason Media Poll (http://www.uscho.com/2012/09/26/minnesota-at-top-of-wcha-media-poll-bjugstad-picked-player-of-the-year/) with Nick Bjugstad picked as the preseason WCHA player of the year. I guess someone other than silly Whioux fans thinks he might be better than most in the WCHA. Maybe he's even got a better shot than most too (Mark Zengerle is second)!:p:D:D

Blah blah blah. He took DUMB penalties over the first half of the season. It dud get better and I hope that continues.

Blah blah blah

Chew with your mouth open much? That's ugly ok. FWIW smart* the Ambroz penalty totals were 11/1st half and 10/2nd half. So the 2nd half ones were smarter? In his defense, every freshman takes stupid penalties, but that was not the reason he did not score more.

MINNEAPOLIS - FOX Sports North, in conjunction with the University of Minnesota, today named Doug McLeod television play-by-play announcer for the Golden Gopher Men's Hockey team.

McLeod comes to the Twin Cities with extensive play-by-play experience and a strong connection to the Minnesota hockey community. He served as the television voice of the North Stars for six seasons, calling all six games of the 1991 Stanley Cup Finals. In addition, McLeod was the first regular play-by-play announcer for the Gopher hockey team, spending 16 seasons behind the television and radio mic. During his first full season (1978-79) covering the Gophers, the team won the NCAA championship and coach Herb Brooks went on to win the Miracle on Ice Olympic gold medal in Lake Placid. During his career in Minnesota, McLeod also spent fourteen seasons calling the Minnesota State High School Hockey Tournament.

"I'm thrilled and honored to return to the Gophers. This is the premier college hockey program in the country and it has always been my dream to come back to broadcast their games again. All my hockey roots are deeply planted in Minnesota and I'm looking forward to again saying, 'It's hockey night in Minnesota'," said Doug McLeod.
