Some are suggesting that more than a dinner must've been involved if he lost a full year. However, I tend to agree that in the era of sCam Newton and Reggie Bush, it looks pretty ridiculous.

The sports drink thing is a joke, better duct tape every Gatorade bottle on the bench.

i heard that no general admission tix not being sold until all the reserved seats are sold out. Any truth to that? i'd rather stand than sit in some of the reserved seating.

That was a new policy as of last year, I'm sure it's still in effect. It was not, however, grumbled about as much as the *gasp* $5 parking.

It's a perfectly understandable policy that brings in a few extra dollars. I'm sure a handful of people just pay for the reserved seat, then stand on the ends like they used to do.

Last year you could buy general admission before reserved seating, no longer this season.

Brett Olson signed a contract with the Abbotsford Heat today and will be in the AHL. Nice job Brett!

In this weeks uscho radio show they talked a bit about the revenue generation opportunities in college hockey. So I'd like to open a discussion on how Tech can best maximize it's position financially and how can Tech grow it's brand name so as to capitalize on places to grow revenue. So here are some ideas of mine which need refinement, and I'd love to hear what others have to say about this.

1. Grow the marketing of the GLI. Offer the TV feed for free to non traditional Hockey markets. Advertise it to those markets in youth hockey publications ahead of time, give away tickets or a trip to see the games from Florida or California. (Part of that is to make sure that the tournament still has a national feel and not a regional feel, if you ask me)

2. Get the new WCHA to do more marketing and to offer the feed of league games to certain places, especially those places where we would like to recruit, like B.C. for instance, for free if you are a hockey related entity. for instance your BC mite league in blah de blah BC gets a free feed. At least find some way to get into those places with your product. I think once youth players get to seeing the games they will start looking to buy the merchandise and you could cover the cost of the broadcasts just by merchandise sales. So when UAa fan blog was saying last year to give away the WCHA feed, I think he was on to something.

3. Find ways to differentiate our league product from the jerks at Nchc. ( sorry, couldn't resist) lets do things aggressive and creative enough to get noticed, and liked by youth hockey people in Missouri or Ohio, or California. Maybe we play a league tournament out in San Francisco once per year or in Salt lake, or somewhere that we can get some good pub and get exposure for our league. maybe we do some thing with the Griffins and the Wings once per year at Van Andel arena for instance. But get out there and don't just leave the ground to someone else to make money off of.
4. We have 3 teams from The UP now. What if we offered a travel package to fans from where ever to see college hockey at discounted rates at the three venues in one week. Say they go to the Soo, see Tech and LSSU on thursday, then NMU on Friday and Tech vs someone else on saturday in Houghton. Add in some cool fall travel stuff during the day and get the state to promote it via the pure Michigan brand.Nice chance to see colors for someone and to see hockey too.

Just ideas but we need imho to get much more aggressive in showing what we have. I think we will benefit long term from the exposure.

comments?

Wait, is this like when we talked about the economics of Lichtenstein a while back? I don't think we need to do that anymore because those fools don't post here any more.

On the serious side, one of the idea you proposed I want to touch on is the "remote" game locations. Any time you do a neutral site game / tourney you are saying "Alumni, come buy tickets and pay for this..." You won't get enough of the home rink fans to travel to a remote site to fill the stands so you need to count on the majority of your attendance from the area around the event. Just look at the GLI - Even with three Michigan based teams every year, it now struggles to the point where they want to drop the invite team and make it an all Michigan event to help boost attendance. BC and CC are great teams, but they don't have as many local alumni as Western, LSSU, NMU in the Detroit area. Yes a tourney can be a promotional tool, but no one is signing up for a financial sink hole. Even in hockey crazed Canada, a BC based tourney with four US college would be tough to fill the seats in my opinion.

If you want to market to distant areas, I think the Interweb is the way to go. If Muckalt is going to Kamloops next week, then this weekend set up a video feed of the Tech home game at a local place that HS and Jr aged kids want to be. Some local Tech hockey boosters can set it up. At the commerical breaks you throw up the message "Michigan Tech will be scouting in Kamloops next weekend... Michigan Tech wants you... Ask your coach for more details..." or whatever.

I would like to see the nWCHA do more league wide things that build the bond between the nWCHA teams. Yeah, we hate NMU on game day but it would be cool to have something for fans to attend that can bring fans together when we are not screaming at each other between the whistles. Maybe send an all-star team to Europe again, how about a nWCHA all-star game or skills competition at the league tourney?

The next great idea is out there, someone just needs to think of it and make it happen.

Since the NHL refuses to get on the ice and generate new jerseys for collectors, I have been forced to search the secondary markets. Here are two imports that arrived from Finland today. Ruutu's Roost is filling up... Pittsburgh Penguins 2007-08 and HIFK Helsinki 2004-05 (NHL Lockout Season). The HIFK is real hockey "sweater". It weighs just under 4 lbs and would be quite the opposite of the RBK Edge jerseys. The jersey body and sleeves are made of a felt-like material and everything on the jersey is either sewn or embroidered, nearly all of it in multi-layer twill. Ruutu only played 50 games for HIFK that season but did manage to post his all-time high for PIMs in a single season with 215. Jarkko now plays for HIFK's main rival Jokerit. In Finland that's like a Tech player getting on the NMU roster the following season... That's not going to make you any friends. Not suprisingly, he posted 192 PIMs with Jokerit last season.

Can we expect Tech to receive at least one first place vote each and every week?

Pheonix Copley gets the nod in net.

Honestly, even with the two given up by Phillips and Genoe, I think it's still a pretty even race this early in the year. Unless Copley is outstanding tomorrow night, I'd expect to see a different starter on Saturday.

Really good content on Tech Hockey Guide! It sounds like Tristan Rostagno's a good get by Mel.

There's actually a real hockey game tomorrow, who starting the 2012-13 MTU Season Thread?
