Watched the game last night and was thrilled to see our young team show such poise and actually get better
as the game went on(powerplay excluded).

Hoffman looked great, while most of his shots were not A type scoring chances he did a great job on the odd
number rushes off holding the post and not giving the shooters anything. You also have too tip your cap to
the D-man in those rushes for taking the pass away and letting him focus on the shot.

As said in the game thread neither team had great flow, I would say because both teams did a good job of making
it hard for the other team to make a good pass out of the dzone to start a rush.

The Cats were much more aggressive on the forecheck, not just the first man but the 2nd and sometimes 3rd and also
showed more 2 man forecheck shorthanded instead of only sending one man like they would in the past.

Powerplay is still predictable and the passing isnt fast enough to get the goalie flatfooted but it did look better in the 3rd
and hopefully they will really spend alot of time the next 2 weeks on this.

An "A" for effort and energy with solid(Paliotta's turnover aside)Defensive zone play. Offense took a step back but we knew it would
against a much better team.

At least we are not in last place.

Spencer got hurt last year it sounds like. Anthione and Forgione...sounds like they need another year of "seasoning" aka they probably aren't that good. They both have to be at least 20 years old by now. They committed when they were 14 years old. Hope I'm wrong, but it seems like the writing is on the wall.

forgione is 19 and in the USHL and Anthoine is in the EJHL. Very different players anthoine very controlled - Forgione blazing speed unreal work ethic very similar to markinson but faster- had more goals than markinson or montagna in ushl and didnt play PP- time will tell -

In the Hockey East blog, Jim Connelly talks about what he learned from the weekend games. One of them is: Don't mess with the "Hoff." I love it! He goes on to say "Remember the name Brody Hoffman, Hockey East fans. The Vermont goaltender stonewalled a very good Massachusetts-Lowell offense on Friday night, earning a 1-1 tie on the road for the Catamounts. Making 38 saves, Hoffman certainly impressed this guy and I am sure this could be just the start." Just the start indeed!

What blows is that we have to wait 2 weeks until the team plays again. Oh well, maybe after 2 weeks of practice the team can hit the ice with a power play.

I was at the game and it was a great college hockey game. I thought defensively both teams limited Grade A opportunities. Our goal was scored on what should have been one of Carr's easier saves. Carr looked like he expected pass. Hoffman was good, didn't give alot of rebounds, plays the puck are fires outlet passes. The power play was much better, it will be good. On the point they need a QB who get get a shot to the net and make good decisions. You could see alot of good in it. I think once they work out a few minor details it will be better. There was really only one time where the PP was completely disengaged. Lowell did not play poorly at all.

UVM is much deeper at the forward postition this year. Montagna, B Brunneteau and Decenzo were healthy scratches. Lenz/Roos/Mountain is a colid checking line, and can get some offense. Brickley/Markinson/White solid, Brickely was strong all night, Markinson is all over and covers alot of ice, hey they scored the goal. McCarthy/Falloon/Reynolds very good, McCarthy had tons of shots, Falloon and him seem to click, Reynolds was disappointing he was weakest forward all night. Massar/Pollesello/Turk were very solid as well. I would like to see Pollesello with more offensive people, but I don't know where. It is going to be hard to get ice time for people, which is a GREAT problem.

On defense, overall, except for one gaffe, they were really solid. Gave up alot of shots but they were from the outside. Walls had a few nice bombs for shots. Again, very solid and deep.

PK was good, love the combo's and the commitment.

Hey, after equal games we are looking down at BC. (It's just a joke)

It does say a lot that those three forwards were scratched. Despite the huge losses of Stalberg and Girgensons as the projected premier forwards, which hurts hugely, they are certainly a lot deeper at forward than they have been the past two years. Problem is lack of snipers, not lack of bodies.

I do think with good goaltending this is a lower middle pack team and if McCarthy, Brickley, Reynolds have good years they could be tough to beat.


What happened on the bad turnover that led to the UML goal? I have seen it referenced a couple of times with no details.....

Man that first goal was an ugly one for Vermont. I learned in middle school not to toss it in front of my own net. First game of the year though, hopefully they learn from it.

This is one of my semi-annual (or more frequent) bit#@ sessions about UVM's inability to fund/build a new arena for hockey and basketball. USCHO is reporting that Nebraska-Omaha hopes to have a new on-campus rink by 2015 or 2016. It will be funded through "private donations or partnerships."

This is frustrating to no end because UVM has been talking about a new rink for about twice as many years as UNO has had a D-1 hockey program. Again, why they heck can't we get our act together when everyone else seems able to do it? Do we not have any wealthy alums that like hockey or basketball? The following is from an April 14, 2012 article in the BFP:

"Chris McCabe, UVM assistant vice president of marketing and business development, said there’s been progress in plans to build a new arena at UVM."

“We are a lot closer than we were a year ago,” McCabe said. “Because we are talking about it so publicly should be an indication of how close we are getting. We are not making any announcements this weekend, but I think you can bet to see some progress reports in the coming months.”

I've been hearing these kinds of statements for years. It's been more than 6 months since McCabe said the above. Where the heck are those progress reports that we would see in the coming months? He said it's being talked about so publicly???? Seems more like radio silence to me.

Okay, assuming there was a betting line in Las Vegas for this, and the over/under was 7 years for UVM having a new rink, how would you bet? Unfortunately, I'd have to go with the over.

Maybe most of the wealthy UVM alums are giving their discretionary funds to liberal causes, such as the Obama reelection campaing, to hasten our national demise into a socialist state of dependency

Instead we need to redirect them to the fundraising for the new arena. That would help in two ways - get us a better arena and recruiting tool and stem our march to socialism and eventual European style decline

Seriously, they are looking for a couple of wealthy individuals to step up and fund it. Until that happens nothing is going to change - particularly with this new University president who values academics highly over sports. I miss Fogel who gave Sports credit for balancing the institution out better and giving the alums something to get excited about. Personally I prefer celebrating a Hockey Cats showing at the HE final four a heck of a lot more than hearing that the incoming class had the highest ever average SAT score. How do you get excited about that as an alum or a potential donor?

Also sucks that we are losing Jesse Bridges to BTV Parks and Rec. What is up that BTV parks and rec is a better opportunity than UVM athletics fundraising and management? Yikes.

A >.500 season would help a lot right now. I think this team has it in them.

where that mini parking lot is between Patrick and the Gut.

that gets them the amount they need and a announcement is coming soon. With the rink going right next to Gutterson

Hopefully not wishful thinking, but that'd be amazing. Sounds too good to be true. Long time no talk everyone! I saw the video highlights for the UML game and from what I heard we were definitely outplayed offensively, but held our own on D and limited them to few prime scoring chances. Sucks Girgensons didn't follow through. We have no snipers or game changers, so it'd be interesting to see where we finish. Yay for tying the (overly inflated) 6th ranked team in the country!
