I'd have to say last year's Gophers have to be a top consideration. The UNH team(s) that went 76-1-1 (and more) over 5 years in the late '70's early '80's couldn't compete at the level the game is at now, but back then, no one could compete with us. It's hard to draw direct comparisons over an extended time period in a sport that has evolved so quickly that a standout player as a freshman may be a role player by the time three more classes of talented youth enter college.

The 2004-2005 Gophers with the Wendell-Darwitz-Stephens line was a force to be reckoned with.

But after that line, the 2011-12 team was better anywhere you look other than backup goaltender. Even as far as top lines go, the Wendell line wasn't that far superior to the Schoullis line. Looking only at Gopher teams, I'd have to give the nod to the most recent one.

Other great teams from the NCAA era were the 2002-03 Bulldogs and the Badgers from both 2006-07 and 2008-09. Hard to say which of those teams was the best.

By your definition, you should start by looking at teams that went undefeated during a given year. Then add the teams one or two losses, but had a winning record against teams they lost to in that year. The list of teams that make the aforementioned criteria would be pretty short.

Begs the question...Has there ever been an undefeated team in D1. ?.

BTW...Back in the late 70's until about the mid 90's, a couple of power house teams north of the border were better than the top NCAA teams. UofT had some real power house teams in the 90's. Sonohara, Dupuis, Hunter and Hefford all played for UofT.

The '02-'03 Harvard Crimson. That NCAA title game still haunts me. The team was loaded and other than a hiccup against Dartmouth in the ECAC tournament final, blew teams away. They had three lines that could score and six top flight D.
