Middlebury ends Williams' 13-year reign atop D-III Directors' Cup Standings

Middlebury is atop the Division III world after finally knocking Williams off the top pedestal finally as the Learfield Sports D-III Directors' Cup champion. The NESCAC continues to flex its muscles at the top of this thing every year year with three in the top five and five in the top 16.

Interesting that Midd wins the Director's Cup without winning a national championship in any sport this year. The key was sending 13 teams to NCAA tournaments and turning in good performances in the tournaments. This is how Williams has dominated the cup for over a decade. Fewer championships but incredible depth in all sports. This year the traditionally strong Midd men's soccer, men's ice hockey, and men's lacrosse (sports in which the Panthers have won national championships) teams all failed to make the tournament this year. Here are some interesting stats from the Middlebury web site:
•31 NCAA varsity teams
•28 percent of students participate in varsity sports
•Almost 200 athletes compete in more than one varsity sport
•School boasts 31 National Championships since the NESCAC lifted its ban on NCAA play prior to the 1993-94 season. Middlebury had two National Championship teams prior to the ban on "team sports", the '79 & '80 Women's Ski Teams.
So which is better, a couple of national championship trophies for the case or the year-long, overall award?
