An interview with rather reticent future Brown defenseman Brandon Pfeil:

And one with the more talkative future Brown defenseman Nate Widman:

Here are two stories about Nick:

It sounds like Lappin is a very good player. Does that mean that he's also supposed to decommit from Brown, and go to BU or BC? :-)

Entering the last game, two of Naclerio’s three playoff goals were game-winners. He had eight points in 14 playoff games and had 14-28-42 numbers in the regular season."

Mark Naclerio may be the sleeper in Brown's 2012 recruiting class. For now all I'll say is that he's a solid top-nine forward (together with fellow recruits Nick Lappin and, hopefully, Kevin Roy), but I'm sure he'll be heard from before too long.

Now, get ready for the rumors that he'll decommit from Brown to attend BU or BC. :-)
Any idea as to when the Class of 2016 will be officially announced?

I suppose you mean a story on the Brown website with information about the new players. I have no idea if or when such a story will be posted. What I know is that seven players have officially accepted Brown's offer of admission: Nick Lappin (F), Mark Naclerio (F), Brendon Pfeil (D), Joe Prescott (F), Derick Roy (G), Kevin Roy (F), and Nate Widman (D).

This is a really strong cohort. Although all the attention has been on Kevin Roy, Lappin and Naclerio are expected to be among the top nine forwards for Brown next season, and to contribute immediately. Prescott is probably not too far behind (21-35-56 in 45 games for the South Shore Kings of the EHJL). Pfeil and Widman will add size and skill to the defensive corps. And let's not forget that Derick Roy has been a solid goaltender in juniors. He played in 26 of his team's (South Shore Kings) games, with a 2.78 GAA and a .912 save percentage. He was second in the league in wins, and sixth in GAA and save percentage. Goaltenders, of course, take more time to develop.

The 2012-2013 team will be young. It's conceivable that ten or eleven of the eighteen skaters on opening night will be freshmen and sophomores.

Hasn't this been the case for the past three years now? Shouldn't we be seeing the upperclassmen who used to be the young players fill most of the starting spots by now?

As you know, Division I hockey players are generally recruited at least two years before they arrive on campus. The new coaching staff was hired in August of 2009, and had little time to recruit the class entering in 2010. Although most good players were already committed by then, the coaches were still able to bring in a few quality recruits, who have developed well (particularly on defense). However, that class is uneven, and it'll become harder and harder for some of its members to remain in the lineup. The class entering in 2011 was much stronger, and a larger percentage of players have already become regulars. The class entering next fall is even stronger, and it's expected that at least five players will contribute immediately and that all seven players will eventually become regulars. It's likely that there'll be only three seniors in the opening day line-up, so the group that will dress will still be young though the full roster (18 forwards + 9 defensemen + 3 goaltenders) won't necessarily be so.

Bob Gaudet came to Brown in 1988. The 1992-93 team (Gaudet's fifth) was his first truly veteran team, with strong senior (Derek Chauvette, Scott Hanley, James O'Brien, Geoff Finch, Mike Ross, etc.) and junior (Chris Kaban, Mark Fabbro, Kelly Jones, Brendan Whittet, Mark Shaughnessy, etc.) classes. That team played for the ECAC championship and advanced to the NCAA tournament. It takes time to build a veteran team because a new coach who has inherited a weak program has to take some borderline players in the beginning. These players are likely to lose their job to younger players who are better, so the team on the ice remains young. This phenomenon is unavoidable for three or four seasons, particularly without athletic scholarships. It happened under Gaudet and is happening again right now.

I understand (and agree with) this. However, it's puzzling that a couple years ago, we thought the young guys we had would be veterans and locks to start in a couple years (which would be now).

I suppose it means nothing but good things for the future of the program in terms of talent level, since the lack of upperclassmen starters, even though we have plenty of upperclassmen, would indicate an extraordinary amount of freshman and sophomore talent. Which is MORE than fine by me.

If the classes of 2015 and 2016 can end up filling every single roster spot, that's great. That means we have a lot of young talent and hard workers. We already know what we have with the junior and senior classes, and it isn't overly impressive. There are some likable guys, but nothing to lose sleep over if they were to be displaced by younger guys (with some notable exceptions, such as Zaires, Wahl, and Robertson).

At least half of the first group of players recruited under Brendan have progressed well, and assumed leadership positions It's not surprising that the 2012-2013 captain (Dennis Robertson) and one of the assistant captains (Garnet Hathaway) will be juniors. Matt Wahl has become an excellent defensive defenseman, and I believe that Marco DeFilippo will become a solid goaltender. No one who watched him beat UNH in Durham last December can doubt his skills. Tony Cerisi, as good a goaltender coach as there is, will continue to help Marco develop.

Among the seniors, in addition to Chris Zaires, Richie Crowley has been a dependable player. Zaires, Crowley and Frank Drolet will be the senior assistant captains. Drolet is a dedicated team player and a very hard worker. Though the average fan may not notice or know much about him, he leads by example. On a side note, his parents are ALWAYS supportive of the team, whether Frank plays or not.

Whittet Announces Seven-Member Class of 2016

PROVIDENCE, RI – Head men's hockey coach Brendan Whittet '94 has announced his third recruiting class as the Bears' head coach. This talented group of seven players (four forwards, two defensemen, and one goalie) is set to join the Bears this fall as part of the Class of 2016. They represent three different states and two different provinces. Illinois (two players) and Quebec (two players) lead the way, while British Columbia, Connecticut and Massachusetts are also represented in this year's class.

"This elite group of seven represent all that Brown Hockey looks for in a potential student-athlete," said Whittet. "They are all tremendous people and elite-level players with outstanding academic records and fierce competitive drives. I know that this incoming group will mesh seamlessly with our returning student-athletes and allow us to realistically pursue championships. These seven individuals represent the best of the best and we welcome them to our Brown Hockey Family.

"I would like to publicly recognize the tremendous effort and time that Associate Head Coach Mark White and Assistant Coach Mike Souza put forth in recruiting such a premier group of student-athletes."

This is what I've been saying for the past month and a half. I've been excited about this group for several months, and when the last piece of the puzzle (Nate Widman) fell into place in late winter, I couldn't wait to be allowed to comment publicly -- which is after the student-athletes have accepted Brown's offer of admission in writing.

Great job by Brendan, Jerry Keefe (now with Northeastern), Mark White, and Mike Souza.

                            More to come...

A good class, but it needs to be followed up with another.

A good point! This can't be it; we need to continue to build with similarly-promising classes each year going forward.

But, I'm still pretty happy about the current incoming class and excited for the upcoming season. We could see a rough start with so much youth and a somewhat challenging schedule in the fall (Ivy Showcase, at Harvard/Dartmouth, hosting SLU and Clarkson, Mayor's Cup, Yale twice, hosting Union/RPI), but I think we have a good chance to make the leap into the home-ice discussion.
