Post The Road to Schenectady - Seedings and Regional Matchups

The Road to the Futile Four in Schenectady: Seedings and Regionals

The teams were seeded 1-8 in both regions, with Union, the lowest seeded eastern team being shifted west to give 8 teams in each region.

West:
#1 Bemidji State
#2 Minnesota-Duluth
#3 Lake Superior State
#4 Alaska-Anchorage
#5 Alaska-Fairbanks
#6 Michigan Tech
#7 Notre Dame
#8 Union

East:
#1 Bentley
#2 Brown
#3 Mass-Amherst
#4 Holy Cross
#5 American International
#6 Fairfield
#7 Niagara
#8 Army

Then the bottom four teams in each region are switched. Then the usual #1 vs. #8, #2 vs. #7, etc. matchups were drawn up. Because five MAAC teams qualified for the tournament, a possible second round matchup could not be avoided, but in the one region with two MAAC teams, the Bemidji State regional, both MAAC teams were lower seeded, minimizing the chances of a second round intraconference game. No changes were necessary in the two western regionals. In the eastern regionals initial #3 and #4 seeds, Mass-Amherst and Holy Cross were swapped to avoid a possible second round intraconference matchup between Holy Cross and Bentley. Beyond this switch no further changes were necessary in the eastern regionals. The regional are as follows, with the four regional champions advancing to the Futile Four in Schenectady.

Bemidji State Regional
#1 Bemidji State vs. #8 Army
#4 Alaska-Anchorage vs. #5 American International

Minnesota-Duluth Regional
#2 Minnesota-Duluth vs. #7 Niagara
#3 Lake Superior State vs. #6 Fairfield

Bentley Regional
#1 Bentley vs. #8 Union
#4 Mass-Amherst vs. #5 Alaska-Fairbanks

Brown Regional
#2 Brown vs. #7 Notre Dame
#3 Holy Cross vs. #6 Michigan Tech

The regionals will be played beginning on Tuesday, April 3rd. The Futile Four will be played the first part of the following weed.

I don't know how UAF is seeded behind UAA given their head to head records. It is an outrage!

Wink

In Schenectady
Our Schenectady
What a warm and friendly place it is to be
Nestled among plains and hills
With a beautiful river that always gives us thrills
And stores and shops with all that one might need or wish to see
And legends and tales and lots of history

Oh Schenectady
Our Schenectady
Let us now plan and help to make it grow

If we will all do our best
Then others can do the rest
For places to study and learn in
Places to work and earn in
Places to live in happiness

The Nanooks are ready. They have 20 teams of dogs and dogsleds and will be ready for the trip to Bentley.

Interesting first round matchup...UMass-Amherst, if I remember right, had a pretty bad non-conference record. UAF lost 3 of 4 to the Seapuppies and took 2 from Iona in NC play. UMass-Amherst didn't make the HE playoffs, UAF made the CCHA playoffs. Still, Amherst has to make a short bus ride from Amherst to Waltham...Fairbanks has a 4600 mile dogsled down the Al-Can and across Canada. That could very well be the deciding factor that gives the first round matchup to Fairbanks!

Well, the Nanooks had better make record time for a dogsled team, given that they have to play tomorrow! Today's action should be underway shortly.

I'm concerned about BSU's chances after being a favorite most of the year they really dropped in the standings the last month or so. Plus they are playing a team that has been there before in Army. The butterflies are churning.
