My guess is because Kunzelman and Nespor split time in Superior and Phillips and Hulme split time in Stevens Point.
That's an awfully tough arguement to make against a person that is out there every night for a team between the pipes.

Yah I was just looking at the stats and she put up great numbers facing nearly double the shots that Kunzlemann did. Hulme wasn't eligible since she didn't get All-NCHA correct?

It is a shame Ashley Reinhardt, University of St. Thomas is not on this list after leading the west in points.

Its hard to get in there when there are only 3 spots and you have the heavy hitters from Superior and Stevens Point in there.
Which forward would you take out? Ubl..no(shocking they didn't give her defense), Grossman..no, Baranzelli...no.
I'm surprised Hakala was in there on D.
I'm guessing if there was a west 2nd team..that she would have been right there.

I would say the first team is
F. Stephanie Ubl, GAC
F. Nicole Grossman, stevens point
F. Gina Baranzelli, Superior
D. Kirstin Peterson, GAC
D. Jamie Lewandowski, Stevens Point
G. Melissa Kunzelman, Superior
Second Team
F. Ashley Reinhardt, St. Thomas
F. Sandra Felton, Bethel
F. Stacy Anderson, Superior
D. Kirsti Hakala, Superior
D. Allison Rushing, Lake Forest
G. Laurel Bradel, St. Thomas

Re: D-III All-Americans Announced
How does Cubberley get overlooked for all-American? Does the fact that her coach doesn't recognize what the rest of the league see's affect the selection process? Goaltender of the week 3 of the last 5 weeks of the season,no one close to her stats in her conference(by far the toughest conference). Does spliting the season automatically remove you from contention?? Only goaltender to shut out Plattsburgh at home EVER !!!!!
Just seems wrong to me.....

One of the problems with being a goaltender in D-III is that it is far and away the strongest position in the entire division. Many of the stronger D-III teams have a couple of skaters who possess D-I skills, but the number of goalies that fit this bill is very disproportionate. Cubberley is a wonderful goalie, but its tough to justify putting her ahead of either Iwachiw or Elek.
Also, I wouldn't say that Cubberley was slighted because she split time in net, since she played over 20 games this season. Look at UWS and Middlebury to see goalies that lose All-American points because of splitting time.

You need to only look at the level of competition they play on a regular basis.
I've never seen Iwachiw, but I have seen Elek. She is good, but does not control the play the way I have seen others. Some goaltenders get a ton of recognition while only facing shots from the perimeter, due to good defensive teams. Some get the recognition for the flashy saves which only means they are out of position for the shot.

As I said initially, Cubberley belongs in the discussion. If you haven't seen Iwachiw, you are missing something. I had the pleasure of watching her play from my perch at Koeppel. And when you speak about the level of competition that these girls play on a regular basis, you are mistaken if you think that Iwachiw or Elek faced lesser competition than Cubberley.
Also, don't judge goaltenders by the "quality" of the defense in front of them. I've seen weak teams like Williams pile up 30-40 shots in a game where none was a scoring chance, and I've seen teams like Middlebury hold opponents to 13 shots and 10 of them were scoring chances.

There is no doubt that Cubberly is an excellent goaltender, so are Wright and Bloom from Middlebury. Iwachiw and Elek are quite deserving of their All-American status. Let's not belittle the accomplishments of others. Elek is perhaps the best all-around net minder I have seen (keeping the puck out of the net, sticking handling, and skating). I don't know how you can say that she doesn't control the play.

Agreed, but let me take it a step further. Even though I didn't see the Elmira/Amherst quarter final game, I did see their regular season tilt, in which Elmira had 40 shots and their only two goals against Elek were a 5 on 4 and a 5 on 3.
I'd say Elek controls things rather nicely.

From looking at the Stats it could have gone either way with these two
net minders...but I never saw either of these two play and obviously the
coaches did and made their choice. This wasn't just ONE coaches choice
here, but an agreement of many.
I'm sure both goalies are regarded very highly by their teams from the numbers they put up. Unfortunetly there has to be a winner and a loser, and many players go through their careers on both weak and strong teams never getting the recognition they deserve because someone else just played a little bit better than they did, or they had a bad luck situation with an injury.
It's sports, it happens. Congrats to Cubberly on her accomplishments and to
Bradel on St. Thomas. Next year is another season, and who knows who
will be the choice then..

.1 I'm not by any means saying that Elek didn't deserve. She is very good and I congratulate her.
.2 Reg season game 2 goals went in off Elmira defense. Second goal off the butt of the defense.
.3 You did not see the quarter final. 1rst goal coach calls player to bench from penalty box when the play was in their end.( Fundamental error the likes of which I can not believe) The player comming from the bench never made it near the play. 2nd goal scored when Amherst pulled the goalie for the 6th attacker. Should have been a 3-1 game had the coaching blunder not been made.
4. By control I didn't mean simply stick handling etc. It is far more in depth than that.

OK I'll bite, Why isn't she playing D1? Playing Boys hockey didn't keep Shannon Szabados (spelling?) from being seen. HC surely knew who she was. Had she decided to come to the states to play, I'm sure the D1 coaches wouldn't have missed her.
Really there are pros & cons when deciding to go D1 vs D3, but to say it is the coaches fault because they did not see someone is a little ridiculous.
