amaena/blackworm?

hey computer types ...

so i was checking my yahoo mail when i got a pop-up (weird since i have like three blockers) that said some blackworm virus thing was trying to affect my computer. i clicked out of the ad (the x box) and the computer automatically transferred me to some amaena site to download some program to get rid of it. i said "cancel" to all download dialogue boxes (and then came here) ... but ie* started having a few problems like:
- back button wouldn't work
- couldn't backspace anything in my address box

closed out of ie, ran norton (which found nothing) and rebooted the computer. after trying yahoo once or twice more, the same thing popped up and ie "crashed" once more. now everything seems to be working fine, but it seems really weird ...

anyone know anything about this?

symantec has nothing about this on their website.

* no comments about moving to firefox, please.

I recently had the same pop ups saying the exact same thing, except I haven't had the problems you're having (not yet at least). I scanned with Symantec and everything came up clean. There is an info thing that gives info about my computer, and most of it is right except it says I am using Firefox when I'm really using IE

I don't really know what else to do.

well i don't know if the problems i was having (stuff's fine now ...) are related to that or not. i did a google search for "amaena" and one of those computer virus discussion forums came up as a result so i clicked on that ... and the stupid pop-up came back. if that hadn't happened, i was going to guess it was a bug that recently popped up in yahoo.

didn't post this last night, but i went to download/run that program and the computer raised red flags for it not being verified or some crap. so do i just pray and run it? or do i call symantec later and see if they have any advice/any new knowledge?

I had the same Blackworm warnings, and used the Vuono program, which cleaned it up. The Vuono continues to update every day, but otherwise doesn't seem to have any related issues.

Yeah, I ran it. Haven't seen one of those pop-ups since, and my laptop seems to be running faster than before.

did you get a similar alert from your computer about it not being totally verified and blah blah blah?

Quiz -- If you are receiving the message stating that the software has not been verified to run on Windows XP, this is a standard message taht happens with a number of software installations. You should be safe.

Quiz, the one frightening thing, if not prepared for it, is that during installation, the computer goes black for a period. If you're skeptical, that's the moment when you kick yourself for trusting it. Then, it starts up again, and runs through a long testing process before going to the Windows startup.

Don't worry, it only does that the first time.

No doubt, it did that for me and I was thinking "Oh ****..." but it came back up and did its thing.
