The Official Thread of the Mercyhurst Lakers

Interesting last weekend for the Mercyhurst Lakers. After just pummeling Bemidji on Friday the Lakers only win 3-1 on Saturday. Looking at the box scores for both games it seemed the Lakers lived in the sin bin on Saturday night, particullarly in the third. Two times it seemed Bemidji had a 5 on 3. Actually, a 6 on 3 at the end of the game. I understand the Lakers had two breakaway chances in the 2nd period but couldn't put it away. The game could have been a repeat of Fridays game had they buried those two chances. It was nice to see Samantha Shirley put some points up.

Two more wins this weekend. It was nice to beat division rival Findlay. The veterans seemed to picked it up a little with McDonald finding the net.
Jim Fetter brings in the Warriors this weekend for another divisional game. I am positive Fetter will have his girls ready to beat his old team. I was excited to hear Jim got the job at Wayne State a few months back because I would love to see the CHA earn some respect. I am worried though that his girls are going to come in flying to beat the Lakers. This will be an exciting weekend of hockey. GO LAKERS!!!!

I agree that this should be a fun series between an established powerhouse and, hopefully, an up-and-coming squad. As I said on the WSU thread, I think Warrior fans will know a lot about their team by the end of the weekend. They may have surprised the Eagles, but I would assume that the Lakers will be ready and ready show Coach Fetter a few things again too.

I cant promise I will be here till the end of the game but after one period the score is 0-0. Mercyhurst has totally dominated the game though. Shots so far after one, 16-0 Mercyhurst. Wayne St. goalie giving many second chances but the Lakers have been unable to get one by. The Warriors will gain confidence as the game wears on if the Lakers cant get one in. If I am still here I will update after two.

Still 0-0 after 2. Wayne St. playing a little better even though they were outshot 13-9 in the period. Both teams had 1 good scoring opportunity. Mercyhurst had a goal disallowed near the end of the period. Actually, the ruling was it never totally crossed the line.

Sorry so quick at the end of yesterday's game. I had to leave. Anyway, here is my assessment of yesterday's game:
Mercyhurst totally dominated the game but couldn't find a way to put the bisquet in the basket. To make it even more frustrating for the Lakers, Wayne State's goalie gave up rebound after rebound and the Lakers still couldn't put it away. The Warriors crashed the defensive net after every shot and cleared the puck away every time. Wayne State was definately fired up for the game. One girl passed me and told me "we are going to kick your as$." Fetter had them fired up for sure. Normally, I would say Mercyhurst will put this one away easily but I have a feeling the Warriors left yesterday with a bad taste in their mouth. I could see that in their eyes when they left the ice after the overtime.

I was also thinking. Polls dont and cant take into account rivalrie games. Or do they? I was wondering what a 1-0 win over an unranked team would do to the Lakers in the polls. The Lakers clearly took control of this game from the beginning but walked away with only a 1-0 win. I suppose it could be said that the Lakers may not have a good offense yet but I dont believe that. Historically, the Lakers start every year slow in the goal scoring.

I will be at the game this afternoon so I will give updates after each period.

Sunday's game:

After one period Mercyhurst is picking it up where they left off. Outshooting WSU 14-7 and winning on the score board 2-0. DelMonte and Yule scoring in the last 6 minutes. Wayne St. goalie playing pretty good game. She had to make some great saves.

2 periods in the book and Mercyhurst has opened it up. Goals from Lyndsay Barch, Aimee Collins and Lyndsay Dellow gave Mercyhurst a 5-0 lead. Naomi Kupderstein scored late in the period to make it 5-1. Mercyhurst goalie Desi Clark even got in the scoring column with an assist on Collins goal. VanderMarliere was pulled after the 5th goal. Mercyhurst outshot the Warriors 13-9 for an overall total of 27-16.

If you ignore the score for a moment, Mercyhurst played better on Saturday than on Sunday. The difference in the scoring was the Wayne State goaltending. On Saturday, Mercyhurst was flying, keeping the puck in the Wayne State end, and peppering Anna VanderMarliere with shots. But VanderMarliere kept making saves, although she was off balance on many of them and made some routine saves look great.

On Sunday, her style caught up with her and VanderMarliere let in 5 goals on 17 shots, including 3 in less than four minutes in the second period. When she was finally pulled, the game was basically over.

Wayne State had trouble sustaining an offense in the Mercyhurst zone, as most of their shots came off the rush. Mercyhurst did a good job of keeping the puck in the WSU zone, and the points are doing a much better job this year of shooting the puck. Far fewer shots are being blocked and they are dumping the puck into the corner or passing it across the blue line more often.

Hustle award goes to Aimee Collins, who picked up a goal and two assists today. I think she is really skating well, and is helping the Laker's third line earn some respect.

Next week, 9-2-1 Colgate comes to town. Go Lakers!

You are right, Mercyhurst may have played a better game on saturday. On the flip side, I thought, with the exception of VanderMarliere, the Warriors played a better game on sunday even though the score didnt reflect it. I talked a little with Coach Fetter after the game and I can tell he is excited about his girls and the direction the team is going. Give him some time to recruit and Wayne St. will be a team to be reckoned with.

Mercyhurst should have an easy time with Colgate today. Colgate's wins, IMO, have been easy games. There is always a chance of a let down after defeating Wayne St. last week but I seriously doubt it. I am looking for a big win. Possibly of the 5-1 or 6-0 variety.

Mercyhurst leads after one period 1-0. Julia Colizza scored her first career goal at the 7:19 mark with assists from Michello Bonello and Theresa Marchase-DelMonte. It was a power play goal. Shots on goal were in favor of the Lakers 17-4. Colgate hanging in there.

Now 3-0 Lakers after 2. Shots on goal were 10-7 in favor of the Lakers. They spent most of the period killing penalties. Goals came from DelMonte at 15:30 from McDonald and McDonald scored at 18:51 from DelMonte and Nugent. Mercyhurst will start the 3rd on a short Power Play.

Final Mercyhurst 5 Colgate 0. Goals in the third for Jackie Jerrell from Ashley Pendelton and Chrissy Yule at the 6:10 mark. Colizza scored her second of the game at 15:08 on the Power Play. Credit the assists to Sara McDonald and Theresa Marchese DelMonte. I didnt catch the shots on goal but it was lopsided on the side of Mercyhurst. Colgate couldn't get anything mustered throughout the whole game. I dont see any chance of Colgate coming back tomorrow and winning.
My three stars of the game go to:
3rd star Marchase DelMonte
2nd star Desi Clark
1st star Julia Colizza

They are about to drop the puck to start today's game. I am guessing today's game will end with a 5-2 Laker win. I will keep all updated.

Just what I was afraid of today when I woke up. A let down from the Lakers. Colgate is just taking it to the Lakers early on. Colgate leads 1-0 on Avery McGlenn's goal at 17:21 from Cirbus and Rhoades. Colgate has outshot Mercyhurst 7-5.

A tale of two halves. The first 10 minutes of the 2nd period belonged to Colgate. They came out flying again. Cheryl Setchell scored at the 4:48 mark to make it 2-0. From then on it belonged to the Lakers in a big way. The Lakers scored 3 unanswered goals. At 7:52 Ashley Pendleton scored the first of two power play goals of the period. Jackie Jarrell scored at 16:21 and Michello Bonello scored a power play goal at 18:27. The shots on goal for the period were 27-6 in favor of the Lakers. No, that is correct 27-6. Score after 2 periods 3-2 Lakers.
