UW recruiting: And the sign said non-blue chippahs need not apply!
Goodbye old thread...what a sad day for college hockey!:-((
Brian Elliott's still not with the team from what I hear. Anyone remember the deadline for him to get accepted..was it the 1st? Hopefully that gets taken care of this week!
A few Wisconsin boys taken in the recent USHL draft:
http://ushl.com/pr/20030822ushl.htm
Mark Osiecki would be a perfect coach for Garrett Suter since Garrett's ticket to a scholarship will probably require him to be the tough, stay-home kind of player that Osiecki was at Wisconsin.
Brendan Olinyk (#6 to Cedar Rapids):

Kerns, Suter
Mitch Kerns was on the roster for GB, and now he is not. Hmmm. What happened? You would think, even if one side wanted him to go back to high school, that he would have been drafted as they did for Suter. It sounds like Suter and Kerns will be teammates this year....with the Madison Capitols AAA midget team.

I was so shocked to see an article about the U18 team in the Milwaukee paper I had to post it (special emphasis on Lampe and Lucyk): http://www.jsonline.com/sports/prep/aug03/163998.asp

Green Bay picked up a kid - Billy Smith - and Kerns was the roster spot he took. Don't know more than that...

Stoughton's Nathan Lawrence seems to really be making some noise for himself this summer including getting a chance to play for the USDT next season as well.
From usahockey.com
U17 FIVE NATIONS
Unbeaten U.S. Selects Win Tournament
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The U.S. Under-17 Select Team won two games over the weekend -- 5-2 over Switzerland and 3-1 over Slovakia to finish first at the Five Nations Tournament in Prievizda, Slovakia. Against the host country in Sunday's finale, Shane Connelly allowed only one goal while Nathan Lawrence, fresh off a four-point game on Saturday, scored twice and added an assist on John Kemp's insurance tally. Defenseman Brian Lee was named the top player at his position and Lawrence led the tournament in points. In Games 1 and 2, the U.S. Selects posted a win (vs. the Czech Republic) and a tie (vs. Germany).

According to Hockeyscouting.ca, Smith signed with the WHL, so maybe a spot is open again.

Hockeyscouting.ca has posted an update showing Smith going to Green Bay.

Smith stated he has had a sudden change of heart in the last week.
"Things have changed in the last week. I have made the decision not to go to Swift Current. I want to go to Green Bay and get a full ride to a major USA College. I would like to play for a team (in College) that has a chance to win a national title."
When pressed further Smith stated it was a conscious decision.
"No real reason (for the change of heart), it was a conscious decision I guess. Remember, the WHL option will always be there.
|
Gotta love that reporting. "it was a conscious decision, I guess." Beats all those players who end up on teams for unconscious reasons.

Gee Whiz...next thing you know...I woke up and I was in the USHL! I couldn't figure out what happened but someone said I made an unconcious decision to forego my WHL opportunity...WOW.

Good to see Lawrence and Lampe do so well this summer. Not a bad list of '87 forwards popping up on the Badgers radar...Skille, Kessel, Lawrence and Bertram! Summer is a great time for dreaming, isn't it?:-))

Skille, Lampe, Kessel, Pavelski, Klubertanz, Lawrence, Suter...a lot of quality Wisconsin born recruits.
I would like to see UW land Bertram big time. He's probably the top kid in Western Canada who's college bound (probably). Kessel is a close second with his skills. Eaves and Co. need to get on a plane to Calgary to meet with the young man, get him excited about putting on the Cardinal and White, and sign him up!
Good to see Nathan Lawrence playing so well. He was almost an "afterthought" if you will, for the NTDP, and his recent play has been very encouraging.
I'm hoping UW gets the Brian Elliot situation taken care of in short order. I'd hate to go into to camp with the uncertainty of having Luke Kohtala being the lone backup.
Wisconsin Hockey: Nervous.

Bertram will also visit Wisconsin. FYI.
I am confident that Eaves and Co. will do their homework, make the calls, make the effort, and do everything they can to land the young man. If he chooses another school, so be it. I like our chances with a Western Canadian against Minnesota, particularly from a program Wisconsin has recruited from recently (Brodeur).
Way early on Bertram...he's going to have a lot of offers.
Wisconsin Hockey: FYI.

Anybody have a picture of Bertram? I had 3 Canadians sitting in front of me in the Metrodome on Saturday.

If we gave you one of ours, you'd have a quality goalie then.

No doubt. But we'll give you a fourth line player that you can use as a starter
