Petition against DivIII changes
I have been asked by a friend who doesn't post here to pass along this link to a petition that was started opposing the potential changes in NCAA DivIII regs. Please sign the petition and pass it along to anyone and everyone you know against this change.
Here's the link:
http://www.petitiononline.com/NCAAD3/petition.html
Thanks.

I urge people from schools other than RPI, CC, Clarkson, and St. Lawrence to start signing.

I signed, but I guess it would have been helpful if I had listed the school... when I see optional I usually don't fill it in.

Thanks for that. I doubt it will do any good, but it's worth a try and it only takes a moment.

Need 2 know
The USCHO website stated in part "As part of a sweeping reform package, the Division III President's Council has recommended a proposal that would eliminate the ability for Division III schools that "play up" in one sport to award scholarships."
Who are the people that are on the Div III President's council?
And how to they get there?
A petition seems like a good idea, but understanding the decision makers and what their mandate is would also help people decide who to talk to and what to do to put pressure on them to change this resolution.
Thanks.

The President's Council is made up of 16 D-III Presidents.
But the ball is out of their hands now.
The final vote will be made by the entire memebership of D-III. So, the petition needs to go to every D-III school.

Hmmmm
Thanks...
I suspect that the voting for all the Div III schools is done by the President's of those schools.. correct?
How many Div III schools?
Does the vote have to pass by a simple majority? Or is it 2/3 rds?
And finally, why would the Div III schools care about only four other schools that much and their hockey programs?
Does this forum feel that the President's of the four affected hockey programs will be able to lobby enough support to either defeat the resolutions ( this seems unlikely in my opinion ) or to have the 4 schools "grandfathered" through an amendment? (This seems possible ).
Just wondering.

I just signed it.
Now I gotta get my wife who went to a DIII hockey school to sign it.
It seems signatures from schools other than the 4 directly impacted would be helpful!!

To the schools affected ...Does anybody have connections to their alumni base, and a way to distribute this petition?

I signed it at 10am and was number 122. A friend of mine just signed it now (90min later) and was number 208. Looks like it's popular.

I posted a message to the RPI alumni sports list, but it is only a tiny fraction of the RPI alumni base.

Just so you all know, I have also sent the petition to the current men's and women's teams, as well as a few alumni for each team AND current and past members of other teams at RPI (who I think will pass on the petition to more members of those respective teams) So, hopefully that will be another couple hundred or so signatures

I have noticed that one present member of the men's team and the father of another have signed as well as at least four members of the women's team. (I aseume that you are one of the latter.)

Wouldn't having players sign the petition be counterproductive, since there is an obvious conflict of interest?

There's at least as much conflict of interest among fans of the teams in question, since the changes will not affect current players. The only people whom I would see having a conflict of interest in the matter are coaches and administrators who would have to deal with such a matter as part of their job.

Yes, I am one of the latter...and I sent it to current players (as well as former players) of all these teams because athletics, and hockey in particular, is a big network...everyone knows everyone, whether it be directly or not. So whether 25guys who are playing for RPI this year sign it wasn't my concern, but rather that these 25 probably know a combined 50-100 players who DO NOT play for RPI or any of the other schools being affected. I just thought this was the fastest way to get that ball rolling because the people I sent this to will be the most concerned.

Maybe, but by 2008 all current players will be gone, so I would assume they are looking out for the program more than anything, which is nothing more than the average fan is doing.
