Do you know why Rochester is nicknamed the Americans? After all, any team in the U.S.A. can call themselves that?

When the Rochester AHL team was first formed, they were affiliated with the Montreal Canadians. Thus, the Americans.

These are the kind of nickname stories I like. If you are going to pick a name, even a common name, still make sure there is some kind of link or unique reason for picking it.

Like Penn State. Anyone can call themselves the Lions. But only Penn State can be the Nittany Lions.

I too prefer original mascots over another Tigers or Lions. But if you're going to go outside the box, then go outside the box. Hamsters is trying too hard without really being bold. In Illinois high schools we have the Centralia Orphans, Freeburg Midgets, and the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes. Now those are bold mascot names that, as has been suggested, developed organically. Maybe Amherst should dig through their history for some references and inspiration.

How about the Academics. Then instead of fighting, they could be called the Arguing Academics.

                  MAMMOTHS

Amherst chose the mascot after voting by alumni, students, faculty, and staff. Close to half of the 9,295 votes were cast for the mammoth, school officials said. The vanquished finalists were the Fighting Poets, Purple and White, Valley Hawks, and Wolves.

Both sound like good names for roadside dive burger joints.

I'll have the Mammoth/Jumbo burger with fried onions, please... large fries and a vanilla shake.
