With a team that scored an average of 1.92 goals per game in conference and 1.91 goals per game overall, worrying about the goalie is focusing on the wrong end of the ice. Somehow, this team has got to score more goals. Valkama is doing the best she can on a a pair of bum knees and Picard is one of the most over-rated players in Hockey East. She is neither a consistent goal scorer nor a play-maker. In 33 games she scored a goal or goals in only 6 games. Do we really need her to score 4 goals against Union? How about one when it counts. On the assist side, she never had more than 1 assist in a game (11 assists in 33 games).

Last thing to bring cheer to your day - O'Neill is transferring (the reason why Erickson is moving to D and why the younger D will have to learn quickly). I think the optimistic target is to finish 6th or 7th in HE so as to avoid BC in the first round of the HE playoffs.

Watching the team last year, a lot of games they *created* a lot of chances but couldn't finish and it wound up getting into players' heads IMO

          Ripping this player??

In 6 career play-off games (3 against Boston College and 3 against PC), Picard has 4 goals and 4 assists. She is on pace to break Pelkey's career stats and become Vermont's all time leading scorer.

Statistically, she has one of the weakest supporting offenses in Hockey East. But she leads her team in goals, assists and plus / minus.

Windjammer Classic field is officially official:

            Minnesota vs St. Lawrence
            Vermont vs Syracuse

Plumer should bring in TJ Sorrentine for a pre-game pep talk... haha

In no way am I "ripping" her. I am simply pointing out that in order to be an elite DI forward you have to score consistently and in important games. Granted she had a terrific freshman year (and playoffs). But, in my opinion, she had a sophomore slump if you look inside the numbers. Down the stretch in the last six games including the two playoff games against BC she had one assist and no goals.

Here is a comparison against a few other forwards in HE. All stats are conference only.

Victoria Bach, on an uncharacteristically weak BU team (finished 6th in the standings), had 24G and 20 assists for a total of 44 points. If you don't like that comparison because she was a senior or some other reason, let's take a look at two forwards from Merrimack, a team that finished dead last and of course did not make the playoffs.

Katelyn Rae, a junior, had 16G-9A for 25 total conference points.
Mikayla Grant-Mentis a sophomore, had 12G-8A for 20 total conference points.
Picard finished with 9G-7A for 16 conference points (with a +/- of -1 in the conference).

These are the numbers which led me to make the comment that she is overrated. I am a Catamounts fan, so I would love her to have a great junior campaign. Let's also not forget that she is an engineering major which means that she has a ton of academic pressure as well as the normal hockey pressure. I believe she has the potential to put up some impressive numbers in games that matter. As a Cat's fan, I am cheering for her.

I don't understand your last point. If she is surrounded by a weak supporting offense, wouldn't you expect a player of her caliber to be the team's leading scorer or am I missing something??

Perfect example. In college, Bach got to play on a line with a player with 171 career points. But then look at Picard and Bach's scoring in international competition.

Lonergan at BC is another example. She goes from having goals and points below Picard last year to being #2 in the NCAAs this year.

And as I said, a lot of UVM's struggles this year were mental IMO. They were creating, they just weren't finishing. They looked a lot better after that tournament in Montreal when they were able to fix their mentality (Plumer actually did a really good blog post on this).

I would say being worst in the league on shots on goal and worst on shots on goal against was more of a problem.

I don’t think Picard is overrated, I just think she had a bad year and may not be as well surrounded as some of the others. As for some of the comparisons, I believe that they are somewhat unfair. Most good players have a very strong linemate to play with which makes a huge difference. Bach and Leslie, Watts and Lonergan, Marchment and Miller, etc are only a few examples of a solid 1-2 combo...it sure helps when you are not required to do it alone.

UVM snags another commit in Vermont Academy goalie Blanka Škodová. Teammate of Kolowrat's with the Czech national team.

HockeyTech's list says she's coming in next year.

You will be able to tell, by seeing if any permits have been issued recently for double-decker bus tours of Burlington.
