Face saving. They can't very well tick off sponsors and bubba country viewers by rescinding the stand for the Anthem policy. On the other hand, they tick off the !bubba by having the policy.

So, they have a policy that is not a policy.
That ship sailed when they went into full partnership with the army to glorify militarism. Would you like to know more?
I think it was the Army bought into the NFL, not the NFL bought into the Army. File under "don't tick off sponsors that fit our demographic."
The Army started off as a paid sponsor of the NFL - they were being charged for promotions during the pre-game rituals of NFL games. When that was brought to light a couple years ago, the NFL started waiving the charges and called itself a partner with the Army and all armed forces.

With the new NFL anthem policy, what's the actual fine rate? Is it per person, or just a lump sum fine? I could see some owners telling their players off the record that they don't much care, that they can choose to kneel, stand, or not show on the sidelines just as a matter of protest to the NFL. At the same time, I could see an owner or GM bringing all of its employees and players off the field for the anthem, just to thumb their collective noses at the NFL.

Yes, if Mr. New Jersey General himself bagged a judgment against the NFL that led to some WFL teams being awarded membership? Could you imagine Trump in the NFL? High entertainment potential without the chance he could blow up the world!
Trump had nothing to do with the WFL.
He owned the NJ Generals in the USFL.
The WFL never went to court against the NFL. The USFL did.

Private league. They can do what they (generally) want. IIRC, the NBA has a "stand for the anthem" rule, also.
Never really developed a taste for tequila. Kind of hard to understand how you make a drink out of something that sharp, inhospitable. Now, bourbon is easy to understand.

Of course they can. It's a matter of why these 32 particular semi-sentients choose to do so. And that's because of the mouth-breathers who buy the merch and plop in the seats.
Mixing commerce and politics is always a race to the jingoist bottom.

And from a business standpoint, they want to keep their fanbase. Period. Once the tide REALLY starts to change, the NFL will change their tune, just like any other business. Look at how long this concussion thing took...just saying......

I can't wait for all 32 teams to retire number 25 in honor of Richard Sherman in 2050. Right about when the DOD breaks ground on the Tomb of the Unknown Civilian Collateral Damage.
