Re: Wisconsin Hockey - 2018 Off-Season - Hope or Despair?

To all of the above responses:
no, not in the athletic department ( I don't see how offering specifics about the success of the football program vs the hockey program would be read as "pro-administration")
no, don't necessarily agree with stated opinions from others
yes, will engage in debate about those opinions

We are in the dead time for the UW hockey team, need to do something to pass the time; about 60% of what I say is based in what I think/believe and about 40% is said just to keep a conversation moving. If you don't want to continue the conversation, that's up to you and I hold no ill will towards anyone for what they do/don't say.

If someone tosses out an "I'd like to see the numbers" kind of comment, I may take the time to find those numbers; I'm kind of a nerd that way. If they don't like those numbers and try to discredit them by changing the context of the numbers, then I'll look at those numbers in a new context and offer a follow-up (see previous comment about being a nerd).

I love UW hockey (have had season tickets since I moved to Madison about 7 years ago), I also love UW football (don't care for games at Camp Randall, but try to watch games on TV), and basketball (try to watch the games on TV), and most things UW.

I'm never going to be the "doom and gloom" guy, that's just not my personality.
Some of the people here are never going to be the "glass half full" people, that just isn't their personality.
I think there is room for both types to exist in the same space.

    Have a great day everyone!

Meh, don't sweat it, it's free country. Hear anything back on that stupid Forbes article?

Congratulations to Tim Davison for signing a pro deal with the South Carolina Stingrays.

When I first saw Timmy as a redshirt freshman chirping in this video, I knew we had a special character on the team. No doubt he brought a lot of laughs and levity to the lockerroom and to fans through some pretty dark times. Just a tremendous all around person. I'd absolutely love it if somewhere down the road we saw Timmy in the broadcast booth doing color. In the mean time, best of luck to Tim as he chases his dream in pro hockey.

Nothing beyond "Your message has been forwarded to the author of the post" from the Forbes "corrections" e-mail address.

and of course as soon as I type that I get an e-mail back from Forbes:

            A message from the author:
In measuring a worker's economic value, the costs of the firm are irrelevant. What matters is the productivity of the worker and the value that worker generates.
I've tried to reach out to Berri directly to continue the conversation, we'll see if he responds.

Here's a crazy Idea, play the game at La Bahn and have it live streamed at Camp Randall. Could sell don't you think? Fill La Bahn and the rest at Camp Randall.

I love the outside the box thinking here. That would be interesting.

Berri wrote more on the subject linked to this tweet to which I responded briefly. He's a moron with an agenda and his labor value theory is misapplied. If I follow, he suggests that if I employ 10 people @ $10k each and they produce $100K in revenue, they aren't exploited. Then my rich Daddy gives my business a million dollars every year to keep me in beamers and cocaine, well, now they are exploited.

I haven't had a chance to look through the whole thing yet, but will give it a read later.

Everyone has to know that nothing will ever come of this. He is a university professor of economics, so he can bring out whatever methods and statistics he deems appropriate and he feels that he has the authority to state that there is only one way to interpret the results.

But you all know me, I love to stick my nose into an argument and dig around for some facts and figures and try to expand/explore a little bit.

I'll see how long I can keep the conversation going for.

based on his retweets he is liberal to say the least. College sports is socialism to an extent. The revenue generating sports (football, men's BB, and men's hockey (only at select universities)) pay for scholarships and programs for all the other sports. He should love that.

Definitely true. But his methodology is stupid regarding Knight. Here's a different example of what he's saying: Abilene Christian had about $3.8m in football revenues for 114 football players, so he would say each player brought in about $33k in revenue. OK. But then the next year A/C built a $30 million stadium. If they put the fundraising and cost into the budget for that year, the revenue side is now $33.8 million. So he then says that year's players brought in $296k in revenue each.

Must have been a hell of a recruiting year to get players worth $260k more each than the ones they had the year before. It's ludicrous.

Edit: Oh and next year they're gonna be back to the same old $30k schlumps!

He clearly has been stuck in Academia too long. If a company pays me $30,000 and I bring in $50,000 I am not exploited. I'm probably going to get fired because I don't make them enough profit. Welcome to the real world professor.

I e-mailed the author once you guys started to. This has blown up. I was ****ed when I attached the link, but I had no idea it would take off. Some of these people write their opinions and the sheep absorb and believe it without any research.

Going back to Rich's comment here because I meant to comment on this at the time but forgot about it.

Frederic will sign his 3 year Entry Level Contract (ELC) in the fall. It's a two-way contract that pays him $70k to play in the AHL or $832,500 to play in the NHL. He will also receive $92,500 per year as a signing bonus either way. 92.5 bonus + 832.5 salary = $925,000, which is his total cap hit if he plays in the NHL all season. He also has bonuses available of an additional $125k (year 1); $212.5k (year 2); $300k (year 3) for hitting various performance based factors.

If Freddy makes it to the NHL and sticks next year he will make a lot of money. If he stays in the AHL, he will make $70k plus the $92.5k signing bonus, which is nice money, but a long way from being a millionaire.

With bonus and NHL time, I think Kunin has made somewhere around $300k this season, but obviously he's now out for 7 months with a blown knee.

Nic Kerdiles is now on a one year, standard 2-way contract that guarantees him $100k in the minors and $650k in the NHL, plus zero signing bonus. He's made around $17,500 in the NHL this year.
