      Cards extend streak - PSU men use strong 3rd period to down Skidmore for 8th straight victory {Article from the Plattsburgh Press-Republican - Jan. 8, 2012}

The Cardinals spent much of Saturday's game trailing Skidmore before turning it around with four goals in the third period.

After Kyle Kudroch tied the score and then put Plattsburgh in front, the Cardinals added a couple of insurance goals to defeat the Thoroughbreds, 6-3, in men's hockey at Stafford Ice Arena.

No. 3 Plattsburgh (10-2-3) stretched its unbeaten streak to eight games, but this one did not get off to a good start.

"I thought we picked up right where we left off (Friday) night," Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said. "We had a bad third period (against Castleton) and a bad first period (Saturday). We didn't have any emotion coming out of the locker room.

"I thought we weren't ready to play mentally. And it showed in the first period."

Skidmore led 2-0 before Plattsburgh got on the board late in the first period, and the Thoroughbreds were up 3-2 after two periods.

In the third, Patrick Jobb sent across a pass from the right wing to Kudroch out front, and he one-timed it past Colin Bessey at 4:24.

Those two Cardinals also combined for the go-ahead goal with about eight minutes left. Jobb motored in and threw it to the net, and Kudroch was there to slam it home. Kyle Taylor also assisted on Kudroch's first goal.

"It was definitely my linemates," Kudroch said. "If it wasn't for them, I probably wouldn't have those goals."

Ryan Craig redirected an Alex Jensen pass into the net a couple minutes later, and 42 seconds after that, freshman Michael Cassidy scored his first career goal.

Mathieu Cadieux made 15 saves for the win. Josh Leis made his first start for Plattsburgh since Dec. 3, but he was replaced at the beginning of the second period.

Kudroch said he didn't think the Cardinals came out flat, he just thought they tightened up and started to get down after Skidmore's early goals.

"And then the third period came, we came together in the room," the senior captain said. "We settled down and told ourselves we gotta get the puck low and do what we do best. And I think that's what we did in the end of the third period."

Vlad Gavrik put Skidmore (4-9-1) ahead 14:55 into the game, and three minutes later, he brought the puck down the ice and Brad Schuler banged it in for a 2-0 lead.

Plattsburgh's Vick Schlueter answered with a rebound goal 18 seconds afterward.

In the middle of the second, Nick Jensen fired a shot from the right point that rattled in during a Plattsburgh 5-on-3. That tied it up and ended a power-play drought.

The Cardinals hadn't scored with the man advantage since Dec. 3, going 0-for-17 in that span. They finished 2-for-4 Saturday.

Schuler tallied his second of the night 1:43 before the second intermission to give the Thoroughbreds a 3-2 edge. Gavrik earned another assist.

Bessey, who left late in the game with an injury, had 29 saves.

Emery said the Cardinals can't get in the habit of relying on late comebacks like Saturday's.

"We don't have the offensive powerhouses on an individual basis to get multiple goals," he said. "So we can't think that we're going to turn it on every night in the third period like this against the better teams."

Plattsburgh State hits the road next week to play Middlebury Friday and Williams Saturday.

Where would 500 wins rank Bob Emery among active Division-III coaches?

                  (Or all-time for that matter).

Some schools, such as elementary schools don't lead to a graduation, but when refering to a college, or university, they aren't going to consider you an alumni unless you completed your program's requirements. That said, I believe he was a victim of circumstance and I am glad he is continuing to play.
