Re: WCHA Week Volume 2

Looking ahead to this weekends action:

St. Cloud State @ Bemidji State

Minnesota-Duluth @ Ohio State

Minnesota @ Minnesota State

Huskies could really use a sweep...I wouldn't bet on it.

Gophers need to shake off their last series. I'm sure they've been working on just that.

Neither would I. I would be semi-happy for a split right now.

Re: WCHA Week Volume 2

Friday's Final Score
Minnesota-Duluth 3
Ohio State 2
(O.T.)
My Highly Informal, Totally Unofficial Three Stars of the Game

#3 Star: Raelyn LaRocque, Ohio State
Rocky's perfectly placed breakout pass sprung Langan and McIntosh on a 2-1 break, leading to the Buckeyes' first goal. Odd man rushes were tough to come by against the stingy Bulldog defense. Just as importantly, LaRocque represents a group of hardworking Buckeye forwards who left the ice gassed, shift after shift. The effort fell just short, but deserves recognition with the #3 Star.

#2 Star: Emmanuelle Blais, Minnesota-Duluth
In the end, it was Bulldog Seniors who made the difference. Blais scored the second UMD goal and had the first assist on the gamewinner. Her goal completed a successful forecheck play. After a Buckeye turnover, Laura Fridfinnson picked up a loose puck, dangled a bit, then sent Blaise a nifty cross-ice pass. The game winning assist was a tape-to-tape pass to Jaime Rasmussen, whose quick release shot sealed the deal.

#1 Star: Jaime Rasmussen, Minnesota-Duluth
OK, she had an OT GWG, so the #1 Star is a no-brainer, right? Well, maybe. But Rasmussen did so much more than that. Very strong on both defense and offense, she was often the dominant player on the ice. I realize this is nothing new. Like Blais, she's a veteran player who knows how to win.

Note: I'll be at the Schott tonight, supporting the Men's team. That's a good thing, except that it means I'll miss the rematch with the Bulldogs. Go Bucks! You were one break away from taking Friday's game. Tonight we get over the top.

Obviously I won't be doing three stars for a game I don't attend. If someone else wants to try their hand at it, by all means do so. (CammieBuckeye? )

Hey Brookyone, you getting ready for the winter?

Just out of curiosity, how can Wisconsin split with Robert Morris (actually had to go to OT to win the second game) and split with Wayne State, of all teams, and not drop in the national rankings?

Well, I've located and dusted off my snow shovel...set some mouse traps in my garage. That's about as ready as I'm gonna get.

The Wisconsin question... How can they do all you mention...split a couple more WCHA conference series with unranked teams, and sweep Minnesota with relative and apparent ease? That's what I'm still wondering.

I trimmed / covered some rose bushes too.

UMD dropped a game to RMU, and St. Cloud and held their ground.. I guess it's just the way the voters are voting this year?

The caliber of play Minnesota displayed that weekend will get you swept by a lot of teams. I'm guessing all five of the Badgers' other opponents put forth a better effort.

Re: WCHA Week Volume 2

Final From Friday, November 20th
Ohio State 4
St. Lawrence 3

Three Stars of the Game: Still Unofficial and Just For Fun

#3 Star: Michelle Ng, St. Lawrence
The Saints bring a disciplined, balanced line-up to the rink. It was difficult to designate a standout, but I settled on the freshman wearing #3. She played with good jump all night long. Had the Saints been able to shut down the Buckeyes in the 3rd, she would have had the game winning goal. But at the most basic level, I'm picking Michelle to represent a hard-working group of Saints that never gives up.

#2 Star: Natalie Spooner, Ohio State
The Spooner/Feste/Tuominen line did the offensive damage for the Buckeyes. Frequently Natalie was able to overpower determined but smaller Saints players. That's often Spooner's game, and tonight it was a difference-maker. Of course she also had the GWG.

#1 Star: Melissa Feste, Ohio State
Melissa really lit up the scoreboard in the third period, with two goals and an assist on the GWG. She was +3 for both the period and the game, as were her linemates. Feste has been a dangerous forward all year long, though at times she's been overshadowed by teammates. It was great to see her in the limelight last night; she certainly deserves the recognition.
