18-year-old Rich Boyd (he turns 19 next month) will be coming to UNH this fall. The departure of Justin Agosta made space for an additional defensive recruit to enroll a year early. Now, there will be 4 freshman defensemen on campus this fall including:
      Dylan Chanter (DOB: 9-17-1995)
      Cam Marks (4-9-95)
      John Furgele (1-15-93)
      Rich Boyd (6-6-95)

Boyd finished his senior year at Cushing Academy with 10 goals and 30 assists in 32 games. Here's more info on his play this season:

Thanks for excellent updates, Mike. So, four frosh D-men joining five frosh forwards. Sounds like there is going to be a lot of competition for ice time this coming season, not to mention the incoming 6'5" goalie pushing DeSmith?

It seems likely the UNH coaches are trying to plan for the possibility that Brett Pesce joins the Carolina Hurricanes organization after his junior season and that Shane Eiserman and Warren Foegele, who are likely to be drafted in the NHL Draft next month, will turn pro before their senior year. Unlike a very small number of Division I teams, UNH does not have the luxury of waiting around until the very last minute to replace a top player who leaves early with a top recruit who decommits from another program late in the game.

What would stop them from doing exactly this? Are you referring to the admissions saga that has been brought up here so many times with regards to the Gaudreau brothers? Some seriously game-breaking defensemen (Fortunato and Plant to name two) became available this spring (as happens every year) and it is very short-sighted poor asset management to not leave a slot open to go after these kids.

But what kind of asset management is it if you don't land the whale and you're left sitting there with money and no player? That's a high risk game to play.

And then there were nine. If you play D and are not named Pesce, you better scramble.

Hopefully, Pesce will also be busting hump all summer.

in a million years neither would go to unh. one to denver, other to bu. from harvard to bu is bad enough, harvard to unh? do you really think they would ever consider unh. of course not

There's no way Coach Umile doesn't start the season with Maller and Cleland, in addition to Pesce.

The rest is absolutely positively 100% up for grabs.

Agreed. But as the season progresses ...

If all of the freshmen can play, Maller and Cleland may feel some heat. And that's not a bad thing, lest they become (to borrow your term) complacent.

2014 UNH players Shane Eiserman and Warren Foegele have been invited to the NHL Combine to be held May 26-31 in Toronto.

At least one of the talented recruits who withdrew their verbal commitment to Harvard was subsequently recruited by UNH. That player strongly considered coming to UNH but ultimately chose a different program.

The point I was making in the earlier post is that UNH can't count on picking up this kind of high end recruit after they have "de-committed" from another program late in the recruiting year. If past performance is any indicator, UNH will continue to pursue these opportunities when they come up in the future. However, these type of late "decommits" are more likely to end up choosing BU, BC, Notre Dame, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota or Denver.
