I am not convinced cameras would help in any concussion diagnosis.

What is a little more worrisome is she has had several concussions but is going out to play again anyway. Far too much unknown about concussions, how one player pops up even though they received a higher G's hit than a player concussed with a lower G's hit.

Concussions are serious business, I'm always concerned with my kids. Pertaining to the article above, Don Cherry said lat night that it was a money grab by the players. I agree. Perhaps Lenny Dykstra had a concussion from baseball? Watch MLB because he went Bankrupt and needs $$$$.

The first thing to watch with this lawsuit is whether additional former players join it. With the current list of plaintiffs it probably has little chance of success given that all of their careers predate the proliferation of research on the issue. The key element here is not just whether the players were injured while playing in the NHL (as opposed to while playing in some other league) but also whether the NHL knew more than they told the players. It can only succeed if the league concealed information from the players.

So it can only succeed with plaintiffs who played after the league knew enough about concussions to understand the danger, or should reasonably have been expected to know. I'm pretty sure that that could only have happened in the late 1990s.

The other critical thing is going to be the discovery process. There is a history of the NHL failing to protect players from concussions after that date but it's not clear what the league actually knew. In the case of the NFL, the trail of evidence that they had engaged in what was flat out scientific fraud on the issue was clear and so a lawsuit against them had a very high chance of success. The NHL's history of management incompetence could actually help the defense here as I can believe that they were so god****ed clueless that they believed the bull**** they were saying about how concussions weren't a big deal. As I said, discovery to find out what they were saying in private will be key.

I also think that Cherry's claim that this is just a money grab fits in with his generally callous and barbaric approach to the game of hockey. There may not be a valid lawsuit here but we are talking about people who suffered serious brain damage playing the game of hockey. The NHL profited off of them injuring themselves over time, which for some of them is truly crippling. So while as a legal matter the league may not be on the hook here, as an ethical matter they have a duty to make sure that get whatever help they need and can live decent lives despite profound disabilities. I see no evidence that they are interested that they take this responsibility seriously.

                Re: Concussions

The studies continue to mount that it's not just concussions that cause long-term damage, but even the accumulation of blows to the head that do not result in significant injury individually.

I agree that some players have joined the lawsuit for financial reasons , but I'm sure some players feel that hockey concussions has caused them long term damage, now, it's almost impossible to put a price on this. iIm sure all players did it while knowing full well the risks.

                    Update from tonight's "The National".

What was interesting was that this was the lead story for tonight's newscast...a couple spots ahead of the bombing in Nigeria! Must have been an interesting discussion when they were prioritizing tonight's stories.

Good article and the link to the article on the world class concussion center opening in Winnipeg this fall was interesting as well.
