Picked up the LG V20 yesterday. Offers things that are important to me (good camera and good audio output) and costs 10$/month (270$ if I buy it outright). Just starting to get it set up with the stuff I use and getting the stuff I don't off.

Old phone died over the weekend. T-Mobile overnighted me a new one, free.

However, I would expect that the phone with cell tech as we know it will eventually wither away in favor of some sort of cell/Wi-Fi LAN hybrid. There will be no voice-only phones and all calls will have video components and only by selecting an option could a person involved go voice-only. I would expect the devices to contain more and more flexible materials so that like, certain prototype display materials we have now, the entire device could be rolled up or folded up so that something the size of a tablet could take up the space of the average current smart phone. The circuitry will likely require such small draws on the power supply that batteries will have less stress put on them.

There may even be something like the current Google Glasses, wearable tech that requires no hands. Or some sort of projected VR display that appears a few fee in front of the user, and can only be viewed by that person wearing the glasses tuned to the correct frequency of the display, allowing for manually manipulation of the objects seen a la the Minority Report movie.

Implants would only be for the gung ho sorts, like a very select group of the tech innovators of today have done, and a foolish option regardless, because something more advanced always comes along and it'll be too expensive to swap out implanted components. Who wants to involve a surgeon in order to upgrade your comm device?
Or heck, could you imagine the surgery backlogs those guys would have if it was the thing to always get the next latest and greatest phone whenever they dropped a newer version of an implated phone?? There's people already waiting around Best Buy know trying to get their hands on the newest iPhone, and they can't release those phones untll Friday.

My 2+ yr old Galaxy S6 has developed bulging battery syndrome and I guess it's time for a new phone (S8).

What causes a battery to bloat?

That's what killed my HTC One.

Believe excess heat generated is the main culprit. If you use an Otterbox like I do that can't help.

My Note 4 is stalwart, but is starting to show its age. Nothing out there really inspiring me to drop $600+, though.

Bit the bullet and upgraded to a Galaxy S8+.

Also moved up to unlimited data for the same price I was paying for 5 GB/mo (T-Mobile.) Pretty good move all around.

Biggest gripe is it has a proprietary charging port *shakes fist*

Bought the S8. USB C connector. Bought adapters on Amazon to let me use my old cables.

Wait, really? My S7 takes the standard charger. I think it can do wireless charging too but I am only a caveman and am afraid of that sorcery.

Wireless (induction) charging is slow, but safe.

Install an app called Ampere to make sure you're not overcharging.

    Re: The Cell Phone Thread

Noticed my S7 Edge isn't holding a charge like it used to, so I might see if I can take advantage of the Samsung warranty thru Verizon.

Apparently Samsung will warranty replace the phone if the battery loses 20% or more of its capacity within one year. I need to call VZW and see if they'll do the warranty swap.

Also, Wireless charging is amazing. I use it for my S7 Edge (personal phone) and Moto Droid Turbo 2 (work phone).

If an app can monitor it why can't the firmware do it? That seems like a basic hardware function. Am I wrong, or is that just the OEM being lazy?

Although my S7 is my first smart phone (bought at 53... stop laughing) and I have no point of comparison, I have been extremely pleased by its ability to hold a charge. I see no difference at all after 18 months of use. Dr. Mrs. has had a string of phones and my daughter before her, and they all had serious degradation after only a few years.

I am also insanely anal about following best recharge practice though. That may be a lot of it.

I've heard most of the third party battery/memory management apps are superfluous and can actually make things worse in some cases. Android can manage those just fine on its own.

I've heard in the past that you can be evesdropped on through your smartphone.
    Didn't believe it until...
This week at work i needed to order two pillowblick bearings. Never looked them up on my phone, never made the order from my phone. Just talked about what I needed to my co-worker. My coworker was actually the one that ordered the parts.
Today I was reading an article on MSN. In the middle of the article was an add for pillowblocks!!!
    What the hell?!?!?!?!

It's not limited to cell phones. I've noticed when watching YouTube videos on my PC, if you go to Google something you're not familiar with that gets mentioned in the video, it's usually at the top of the search suggestions. Seems that Ajax scripting now has the power to 'hear' video, or at least knows the most searched terms based on the video you're watching.

Facebook has it too. I googled Air Force Marathon, and it popped up in my feed.
