The Edge has a view screen that goes all the way from one side of the phone to the other, no bevel required. It also has some upgraded specs, though I don't know what they are.

Since the S7 is banned on planes, what do you do? What do you do?

The Note (left) is banned. Mine (right) is fine.

            Hmm. iPhones too.

Maybe batteries have always exploded and we're just noticing them because of confirmation bias now?

In February lithium-ion batteries were banned from commercial flight bulk cargo because boom.

Batteries have always exploded. We're just seeing more of them now because people are using their mobile phones more than ever, requiring more energy capacity from a thinner and hotter device (heat dispersion issues), and, of course, Chinese #1 Production Quality!

Are phones forever, or is there a natural successor tech that will replace them? (Please don't say implants. I am too old and have read too much SciFi to believe it is a good thing.)

I have no idea where the tech will go.

However, I would expect that the phone with cell tech as we know it will eventually wither away in favor of some sort of cell/Wi-Fi LAN hybrid. There will be no voice-only phones and all calls will have video components and only by selecting an option could a person involved go voice-only. I would expect the devices to contain more and more flexible materials so that like, certain prototype display materials we have now, the entire device could be rolled up or folded up so that something the size of a tablet could take up the space of the average current smart phone. The circuitry will likely require such small draws on the power supply that batteries will have less stress put on them.

There may even be something like the current Google Glasses, wearable tech that requires no hands. Or some sort of projected VR display that appears a few fee in front of the user, and can only be viewed by that person wearing the glasses tuned to the correct frequency of the display, allowing for manually manipulation of the objects seen a la the Minority Report movie.

Implants would only be for the gung ho sorts, like a very select group of the tech innovators of today have done, and a foolish option regardless, because something more advanced always comes along and it'll be too expensive to swap out implanted components. Who wants to involve a surgeon in order to upgrade your comm device?

Well, presumably surgery will be galloping along as well, and eventually you'll just have a port in your brain to stick stuff in.
