Forums, in general, are dieing. Almost every forum I'm on (carries subject matter) has a very similar thread to this.

I'd better explore this social media thing then. Kids - they seem to like the Rock & Roll too.

I don't know about anybody else, but USCHO hasn't made it incredibly easy to continue using this platform. I had to spend several months working with their admins, I used to post somewhat frequently back 2010-2013 but went on a short hiatus and when I tried to come back, the platform had shifted and I didn't have access to my old log in. Not sure if that's affecting anybody else, but it made it hard for me for some time.

I think a bigger reason, at least as far as hockey east teams go, is that the popularity has dropped way off in the last 15 years or so. It seemed like the 2004 FF in Boston was the high water mark for the league and since has been on a continual decline. Iím a Maine fan though so maybe my view is a little skewed.

Yep, I get kicked off for a new password so often, and I have to think about it whether to set a new one up. also, all my nieces and nephews who go to college would not know a forum if it bite them. Now, they can't live a second without their phone, and their attention spans are mere seconds, but it is inconceivable that they would be here to add a comment. I think instagram is where they spend every minute of the day.

Specific team boards, and real life happen. Social media also.

As long as Ralph Baer's here, RPI will always have a game thread.

Actually, I often think that I should stop doing them or at least only do them when we play a school which has a significant number of fans on USCHO. The reason that I started posting weekend series threads was to get interaction with fans of the other team. If that doesn't happen, then we might as well just post on our regular thread.

As said earlier on this thread, there are also very few younger fans who post here at all.

Main reason being the overall shift from forums to social media. Also my theory: interest in college sports is waning, not just certain B1G schools that got shafted by hockey realignment. Kids these days graduate with so much debt that the last thing they can afford is season tickets/road trips back home to stay in touch. Just seems like Iíve seen it in all the sports and schools

I know that in the Michigan team thread we have 3 maybe 4 regular posters. We used to have a lot more. With so few contributing, it doesn't seem worthwhile for a series thread.

Forums are dying. I still enjoy posting here. There are several fans that I see at Yost each weekend that I consider 'posters' because that's how I know them, although they post once a year, if that these days. People that were very active posters years ago. They're still around, still supporting the team, but not active on USCHO anymore. I think social media and team specific sites/blogs are where more people spend their time these days.

I would not say all forums are dying. But this one is.

A car board and a cruise board I get on are still very popular. This one, as wT says, the number of Michigan posters is getting really small. And it's not just this board, the rivals board for our team is even less than here. That never really was as happening as this board- and both trailed off at the same time.

    Oh, well.

What he (and a few others on this thread) said. It's also my observation that millennials tend to be markedly more ambivalent toward sports in general than were their predecessors.

As a current college student I'd also like to pitch that it's harder now than ever to go to a game. I'm not speaking for myself, because I go to most games, but sports are slowly reaching airport levels of security theater with the clear bag policy and other bull****. Why go to a game when I can't even bring in a simple purse when I can spend a night on the town or something like that? (It's also pretty expensive to go to games; at UVM it's free for students but I feel like we're an exception to the rule especially when people of my generation don't have a ton of disposable income. Seriously, most of my friends only survive because of crowdfunding, whether it just be something like a GoFundMe or Patreon support. But that's a rant for another time.)

But yeah, forums in general are fairly outdated. I'd bet a reasonable amount of money that I'm probably one of the youngest "regulars" here. Most people my age rely on social media, Twitter, Facebook et al. I think schools aren't doing a good enough job of using that to promote their teams, to be honest.

From a student perspective, I'd have a hard time getting as excited about going to games as I did back in 2010 too. Part of the excitement for me was researching the other team before the game and using that information to berate and shame the goalie/coach/etc. You get kicked out for doing that today. I've seen it, I've watched at UMD students get escorted out for swearing, being too rowdy, and chants deemed "innapropriate". We would find out the goalie's mom's name and let him hear it back in the day.

I think I agree, the younger age group doesn't really utilize these platforms anymore. I don't think student section ticket purchases have gone down so the fan #'s have remained consistent, but their interest outside of entertainment is more passe than anything else.

Amen to the airport security, especially at certain places (RIT I'm looking at you).

As for the site, with social media becoming more and more draconian about "conduct", I wouldn't be surprised to see sites like this start to make a resurgence. Sure, it's not the one stop shop like social media, but it'd be kind of cool if there was a sort of plugin to the PHPBB board that worked like some of the social media sites, and you could get the notification and reply to it, thereby allowing both "old and busted" and "new hotness" to co-exist. Maybe I just found my new personal coding project...

Re: I've noticed there're no weekend series threads of late

One thing I've noticed recently with the Clarkson site now not having a chat is that it made communication so simple, I enjoy interacting with other fans even if it's going to lead to a disagreement, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. As others have mentioned a few schools like Minnesota and North Dakota have forums which produce a lot of traffic which takes away from here. With away games I'll try and get to as many games that my schedule allows but most of the time I'm just watching crappy ESPN + or buying a non-conference feed with little to no interaction besides a few people posting things through the game and then after.
