I'm still not understanding how a helmet would have prevented a broken collar bone, nor prevented road rash.

I've crashed once on a bike, once on a motorcycle
there's really only three types of bike riders:
    those that have crashed
    those that are going to
those whose bike isn't ridden (which is what I suspect you people are)

paid the medical bills myself, how is that not being responsible?

but getting back to the doctor and guns, how come he doesn't lecture gang bangers and homeboys not to play with guns?
if he's so concerned about it, why not teach those who are most likely to come to him to have the lead plucked out?

Huh. Someone else on the same page. With freedom comes responsibility. The healthcare folks are required to ask or get demerits but anyone with experience just rolls their eyes. If they don't care for themselves kinda hard to care for anyone but their families who are the ones who suffer in the end. Gotta love the live free or die types that don't quite manage to die but cost big bucks. (And their families because statistically round the clock care isn't covered by insurance so families end up in the hole for the $$$ rather than let them languish.)

Well, they did one thing right.

        https://www.cnn.com/2018/12/18/polit...ban/index.html

(CNN)The Trump administration rolled out a new federal regulation Tuesday officially banning bump-fire stocks.

Those who possess the devices, which make it easier to fire rounds from a semi-automatic weapon by harnessing the gun's recoil to "bump" the trigger faster, will have 90 days to turn in or otherwise destroy them from the date that the final rule is published in the federal register -- likely this Friday -- according to senior DOJ officials.

Bump stocks gained national attention last year after a gunman in Las Vegas rigged his weapons with the devices to fire on concertgoers, killing 58 people.

Officials at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives had previously concluded bump stocks were merely a gun accessory or firearm part, not subject to federal regulation, but President Donald Trump called on the Justice Department to outlaw the devices soon after the tragedy.

Justice Department officials told CNN Tuesday they took a "fresh look" at the case law, technology, and the devices and their functionality "in light of modern developments."

The rule concludes that bump-fire stocks, "slide-fire" devices, and devices with certain similar characteristics all fall within the prohibition on machine guns by allowing a "shooter of a semiautomatic firearm to initiate a continuous firing cycle with a single pull of the trigger," and therefore, they are illegal under federal law.

Happy they banned these but it really should have been done by Congress. Hard to see how the Obama DOJ could have been completely wrong. I wonder what will happen as far as people surrendering them and how hard the feds will go after the ones that aren’t.

They wont go after them at all...it will be an add on when they find someone with an illegal weapon OR it will be an excuse to get someone if they think they can get them on something else. This will be like the seat belt law when it first got put into play...

If a state has truancy laws on the books, would that change the situation/ruling? I would think that if truancy laws were in place, then the state schools would have to be considered having custody of those students whose families could not afford private schools or loss of income required of home-schooling families.

Florida School Truancy Laws. The Florida Truancy laws state that any child between the ages of 6 and 16 must attend school. If a student's 16th birthday happens during a school year, they are no longer required to attend but must make a formal filing that indicated their decision to end their academic enrollment.

Great argument. Too bad the lawyers blew it.

I base this on the flexor action of the trigger finger:
                        - with a semi-auto you flex once, get one round fired, and must relax and re-flex to fire a second round
                        - with a full automatic you flex once and get continuous fire until the magazine empties or you relax
                        - with a bump stock you flex once and get continuous fire until the magazine empties or you relax

Hence my opinion that a bump stock is a mod to make a semi-auto a full automatic and should be illegal.

Reality is law enforcement shows up after an event, tries to figure out what happened, and writes up the report for the lawyers to argue over.

The flaw to your argument is that in that specific school, law enforcement had an officer stationed on the grounds, but he refused to confront the shooter. The argument can be made, quite easily, that he - the man in the Kevlar vest - failed to protect and serve the students in that high school.
