  • College Hockey Imperialism

This is something run over at /r/collegehockey by user sircaptainbighead, figured I'd cross post it over here.

Basically, every game/series is a battle over land. The initial land layout is based on the closest rink to the centerpoint of a specific county using the great-circle distance formula. The initial layout can be found here: https://i.imgur.com/BOi8RN1.jpg (there's a slight error on UConn's home county due to their unique situation; that is going to be fixed)

    The rules:

-If a team plays a series during a weekend, the winner of the entire series takes the territory rather than just the most recent game. In the case of a split series, the tiebreaker is decided on goal differential.
-Teams that play different teams will still be treated normally, and can lose territory after a single game.
-Teams that tie (either for goal differential or just in a single game) will now have their combined territory split evenly, with each team getting an approximately equal number of counties. (So if, say, WMU and BGSU tie tonight, their territory will be combined and split 50/50.)

Here is the map after Week 1: https://i.imgur.com/lRu4rHn.jpg

    How the map played out:

-Union defeats Army 4-1 to take over their territory
-Lake Superior sweeps Merrimack 5-4 and 1-0 to take over their single county
-Providence defeats AIC 3-1 to take their land
-Arizona State shuts out Alaska on both Saturday and Sunday to add North Alaska to their territory
-Miami sweeps Alabama-Huntsville to take over most of the Southeast
-Bowling Green defeats Mercyhurst 8-2, beginning its takeover of Lake Erie
-Colorado College and Alaska-Anchorage split their series, but Colorado College wins the goal differential by a whopping 13-6 score
-Minnesota ties Minnesota-Duluth on Saturday, but defeats them on Sunday to take over their territory
-Vermont upsets Michigan 5-2, and takes their land

They ran this last season, too, and here's the album of every week:

    Some facts:

This is the first week outside of Week 0s that Lake State has had land. They lost it Week 1 last year and never won any afterwards.
    Harvard has NEVER had land

Oh my God does Week 21 to Week 22 still sting of what could have been.

This is actually a neat little experiment.

Also, this is updated after every week, not every game (because one person runs it and that can be tiring with IRL stuff), so tonight's WMU/BGSU game for example will factor into next week's map.

The other half of this home-and-home series finishes up in a couple of weeks. Will that second game be treated as a one-off like this one or will the calculation "look back" and treat both games as a weekend series?

Interesting how you can have the worst season ever, but one Saturday win gets you a third of the eastern seaboard and part of the midwest.

                  Re: College Hockey Imperialism

Tonight's games weren't included, but this week's map has been posted. Also, the "split land for completely tied series" rule was scrapped as it's too much of a pain.

                  https://i.imgur.com/ULLXTQq.png

-Bowling Green defeats Western Michigan 6-2 on Tuesday, and then splits Robert Morris but wins the goal differential 8-3. As a result, they control a continuous chunk of land that stretches all the way from Lake Michigan to the Atlantic Ocean.
-Penn State sweeps Clarkson to take over Clarkson's one county.
-In the Ice Breaker Tournament, Providence defeats Miami 4-0 on Friday, while Notre Dame ties Mercyhurst 6-6. On Saturday, Notre Dame defeats Providence 3-0, taking over both Providence's and Miami's land.
-Colgate sweeps New Hampshire to take over its land.
-Wisconsin sweeps BC to take over its tiny counties in Massachusetts.
-Maine sweeps SLU to take over its territory.
-Minnesota-Duluth sweeps Michigan Tech to control a different part of Lake Superior.
-Bemidji State defeats North Dakota on Friday and ties them on Saturday, taking over their land.
-Michigan State splits with Northern Michigan, but wins the overall goal differential 7-6 in order to take their land.
-Union ties Omaha on Friday, but defeats them on Saturday to take over their chunk of the Midwest.
-Denver defeats Air Force 4-1 on Friday, and slowly begins to take back Colorado.
-Ohio State sweeps Arizona State, and takes over their massive chunk of land out west.
-Quinnipiac defeats Vermont 3-2 on Saturday to take over both Vermont's original land as well as Michigan's land from last week.
-Northeastern sweeps Sacred Heart and snags a tiny piece of Connecticut and Long Island.
-UMass Amherst sweeps RPI and unites the Albany region and Western Massachusetts.
-Western Michigan sweeps Ferris State to gain back some territory after losing their original home to Bowling Green.
-Canisius splits with Holy Cross, but loses the goal differential 10-9 to give Holy Cross its territory.
-Niagara and Mr. Bee split as well, but Mr. Bee wins the goal differential 6-5 in order to get Niagara's one tiny county.

If that means Bridgeport and the endless traffic jams on the Conn. Turnpike and Merritt Pkwy, you can have it back. Long Island might be a different story if that tiny piece includes The Hamptons.

Yes and no - you got Fairfield County CT and Nassua County on Long Island. oof

Figures that Yale would own The Hamptons--at least for now.

                              This week's map: https://i.imgur.com/tdYRvbH.png

-UMass Amherst defeats Ohio State on 6-3 on Friday, but loses to them 3-1 on Saturday. They still manage to win the overall goal differential 7-6, so they take over their territory.
-Quinnipiac defeats UConn 4-2 on Tuesday to take over most of Connecticut. They then defeat BC on Friday to keep their territory.
-Clarkson beats Wisconsin 4-2 on Friday, while SLU beats Holy Cross 4-3 to temporarily take over their territory. Wiconsin defeats SLU on Saturday though, so they end up with the Holy Cross land.
-Minnesota-Duluth sweeps Maine to get their territory.
-Union sweeps Northeastern to take over Eastern Massachusetts, while also expanding their territory to Bridgeport, CT and Nassau County, NY.
-RIT defeats Colgate 6-1 on Saturday to take their land, almost completing a continuous stretch if not for one pesky county that belongs to Cornell.

EDIT: Also, a bonus map that factors in the US U18s... https://i.imgur.com/VbR4uqm.png The only differences are that the U18s get Dartmouth's land and the Gophers get Notre Dame's original land
