Re: RPI and UMA home and home, 10/12/18 and 10/13/18
In UMass’ preseason opener, the Minutemen thoroughly dominated the Royal Military College of Canada, winning 6-1 and outshooting the Paladins 56-15.
Leading scorer for the Minutemen in the game was sophomore John Leonard with two goals and two assists. Three other players had multi-point games, those being freshman Marc DelGaizo with a goal and an assist and sophomores Cale Makar and Philip Lagunov with two assists each.
Sophomore Matt Murray, who got the bulk of the playing time in net last year for UMass, was the starting and winning goaltender, making five saves in the first period. As far as I know, he is no relation to the Matt Murray who has two Stanley Cup rings. Two other goalies, a sophomore and a freshman, also saw time in the game.
The schedule on UMass’ website lists Friday’s game in Amherst as “Newmass Night,” perhaps in honor of all the freshman and sophomores of whom they may be expecting big things. The team’s roster lists only three juniors and four seniors.
Note that old friend Ben Barr is the associate head coach of the Minutemen.
