I will never look down on someone working an honest job, whatever that may be.
My company bumped up their minimum wage to $15 (custodial staff, entry level animal care, etc). Maybe 100-200 people out of 2000 employees. It was a year+ long process, but they eventually adjusted the pay of _everyone_, even those of us making six figures. It cost the company millions of dollars a year.

That would be great if every company did that. However, I fear that you may be the exception, not the rule.

Edit: and kudos to your company for doing that!

This. I had several clients during the height of the Fight for $15 that raised their floor (not necessarily to $15, but most had the goal of getting there by a certain point). Every single one that did adjusted the pay scales all the way up the chain. For some of the reasons Brent mentioned, you simply can't raise the floor without making adjustments upwards. Now there may be other consequences (i.e. raising prices of goods, eliminating bonuses, etc.), but, at least with the clients that I worked with, the raising of the floor led to an increase all the way up the chain. Something about a rising tide lifting all boats.

And it’s not even close to the best thing about his employer. They truly are an incredible organization.

Mine's great, if you were hired 6-7 years ago or earlier. Now it's a little above average. They love the grandfathering in of things. I have benefited greatly from that (17 years, as of this past Labor Day).

I’m also an old timer at my company. 14 years. It’s a big company in a small isolated town, so it’s the only game in town for me. Once the kid is out of school I think we’re going to bounce around out west.

We're not the only game in town, but from all I've heard, we are still somehow the best in the industry in this area, for employee stuff. I have seen, and this DOESN'T apply to just Millennials, that blue collar is still a stigma. It's sad.

Brent, here’s the thing, you did denigrate them. Even using a term like “flipping burgers” is pretty demeaning, it gives off the attitude that their work is easier than yours.

But yes, raising the minimum wage will not raise other wages, at least not automatically. What is does do is give us leverage against employers by creating more opportunities for working class people to work a job that lets them live. I mean, there’s a lot more that we can do but that involves things like unions and socialism.

It needs to be unstigmatized as the cost of a four year degree won’t be going down anytime soon

It IS easier. That's not an insult, that's a fact. Mowing a lawn is easier than being a cashier at a gas station. The stigma is that it's not worthy of consideration of being a productive member of society. It's not an "honorable" job. It IS an honorable job. You're doing what needs to be done to provide for yourself, your family, whoever.

                            Just a note to remember:

If all Democratic protest voters had instead voted for the person who could win in both 2000 and 2016, the Supreme Court would currently have a 7-2 split with seven justices named by democratic presidents. The Voting Rights Act would still be in force.
