Nahh, we can convert Joe. He's a staunch conservative Catholic with the usual fixation on abortion who is past 60, but dammit we can still convert him!

Never really developed a taste for tequila. Kind of hard to understand how you make a drink out of something that sharp, inhospitable. Now, bourbon is easy to understand.

Speaking of this, I saw reports all the way from 5.6 to 7.2. One of the first times I can remember different magnitudes being reported, and certainly the first time there was that much of a difference in reported magnitude. Anyone with better background on this have an idea?

Wisconsin GOP looks to destroy separation of powers like MI, except on BALCO era Barry Bonds steroids level.

Is the Assembly apportioned by districts or % of the vote? I'm assuming the former with equal populations in each.

Say a deep blue district (Milwaukee, Madison) goes 90/10 Democrat. A rural district goes 60/40 GOP. The % vote is D 75/25, yet the seats are 1-1. You want it 2/0? Get out the gerrymander computer and it can be all yours.

Btw, looked at the politico voting maps for statewide races. It looks like the GOP won rural and D won cities. Guess where the voters are concentrated?

It is apportioned by districts (and is not possible for it to be by % of vote). The general concept of districting helps Republicans to begin with because there's always a D concentration in cities. But the result is so skewed there is gerrymandering in a state that has full on GOP leadership for a decade.

Ohhh, so that's how gerrymandering works. Thanks, I'm sure there were a lot of people around here that didn't understand the concept.

I’ll post this here because it’s political in nature though it is about the earthquake here:

Mat-Su Borough faces criticism for public information following earthquake.

A bit of background, the Matanuska-Susitna Borough is the Borough north of Anchorage. It includes Wasilla and Palmer and a lot of other areas. It is heavily Republican, aka Palin country.

Anchorage, in contrast, is a lean Democrat area (our Mayor is a Democrat and the Assembly is majority Democrat).

Guess which government has had twice daily press conferences from officials giving out information on things like status of roads, shelters, water, schools, even garbage service? Yeah you get what you elected. Too bad it’ll be difficult to use come election time.

A college kid running for 13th Ward alderman gets a lesson in the Chicago Way

An interesting read into how big politics can effect even local aldermen campaigns.

                        The summary:
“We turned in 1,703 signatures. We compared them to the 2,796 revocations, and found only 187 matches, meaning only 187 people who signed David’s petitions filed revocations,” Dorf said. “So, what about the 2,609 people who didn’t sign for David but who filed revocations? That’s fraud. That’s perjury. That’s felony.”

Dorf said that he will ask the elections board next week to refer the matter to Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx.

But Foxx, a Democrat, won’t want to anger the Boss.

Neither will incoming Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul, who famously said he would not “go fishing” for corruption, and who also received a million dollars in Madigan political money.

And current Illinois Attorney General, Lisa Madigan, is the Boss’ daughter.

This is Chicago, where the Davids get crushed by the Goliaths. And where the boss is the boss.

Not good. But look on the bright side. Perhaps there won't be any IL elimination of people on the voter rolls, voter ID discrimination against minorities, missing voting technology - only in urban districts, stealing of ballots, changing of laws to nerf other political parties, pretty much behaving like a racist, daily lying, postponing supreme court justice selections from the other party to benefit yourself...colluding with Russia, breaking campaign finance laws, blaming everyone else for your incompetent mistakes...tariffs that protect one sector cause inflation and hurt the US consumer, tax breaks for corporations that will never spend them, exploding debt...wrecking relationships with our allies, complementing dictators that either threaten to destroy the US or ones that invade other countries. Sorry, got carried away there.

If you're a media mogul who hates brown people, they'll tolerate (alleged) rape, too.
