so just a perfect storm? Just seems crappy. I'm not sure how the DM is suppose to realize that guy is back on at that exact moment?

Perfect storm and not paying attention by the Polish defense.

What is a FIFA Match Commissioner?
The role of the FIFA commissioner as FIFA's official representative at a match is of paramount importance. He is the authority responsible for ensuring that the match is properly organised and runs smoothly. The commissioner shall be absolutely objective and his behaviour invariably reflect this principle.

Great analysis for once from Dr Joe. The confusion was because Poland forgot there was both an injured player waiting to come back and a substitution waiting to happen.

Incorrect. The referee should not be waiving a player on behind the opposition's outside back and even with the last defender. It is incumbent on the official to ensure play has either stopped or has transitioned toward the middle third so the player is entering into the relative middle of the opposition's formation.

Oh **** off, play was moving towards that Senegal’s goal, in the middle third, almost the attacking third, and the player was at midfield when the referee waved him on. It’s not the referee’s fault the Polish player decided to play the ball back and the Polish defense forgot that player existed.

What do you want the referee to do? Politely ask the Polish left back to move backwards so he can wave the player on?

A player doesn't have a right to enter the field at any point they want, and the opposition is not obligated to adjust their play in order to accommodate the reentry.
The referee should not be bringing a player on behind the defense of the opposition. Period. It was a mistake by the official.

EDIT: That isn't to say Poland weren't guilty of failing to maintain awareness. This is exactly why you preach awareness and focus in sports: weird things happen, refs make mistakes, etc.
But you can say both that the ref screwed up AND that Poland needed to be more aware - these aren't mutually exclusive.

So basically you want a team to play down player until they a) have possession and b) said possession must be in the attacking third, all because a player needed treatment? No.

Maybe if the Polish midfielder doesn’t karate kick that ball 10 yards past his defense that goal doesn’t happen, how about that?

That's not it at all. The player should enter into the relative middle of the oppositon's formation, not behind their defense. It's that simple. The referee has the discretion to hold the player off the field until an appropriate time as so the entering player does not gain an advantage. The referee did not exercise that discretion in this case. I really don't understand how you can argue that.

Because now you’re giving an advantage to the other team by holding that player off the field for nothing but an arbitrary reason. A player should be on the field playing not waiting for a perfect moment all because he got fouled.

The player entered with referees permission, he entered from the touchline, near midfield. I’m sorry, this is the World Cup, I would expect a team’s defense to be able to track a player waiting to come on standing at midfield.
